jcatcw writes "David Short, an IBM consultant who works in the Global
Services Division and has been beta testing Vista for two years, says
[0]users should consider 4GB of RAM if they really want optimum Vista
performance. With Vista's minimum requirement of 512MB of RAM, Vista will
deliver performance that's 'sub-XP,' he says. (Dell and others recommend
2GB.) One reason: SuperFetch, which fetches applications and data, and
feeds them into RAM to make them accessible more quickly. More RAM means
more caching."

bleeding-edge hardware. 'Aperture's main drawback is still performance as
it was designed for bleeding-edge machines. On a quad Core 2 Duo Xeon, it
is very usable but Lightroom just feels faster for everything regardless
of hardware. Since Aperture relies on Core Image and a fast video card to
do its adjustments (RAW decoding is done by the CPU), it's limited to
what the single 3-D card can do. Lightroom does everything with the CPU
and so it is likely to gain more speed as multicore systems get faster.'"

Algis writes to tell us the BBC is in the process of [0]striking a deal
with YouTube to allow BBC content to be posted on YouTube. Previously the
BBC has demanded quite a few video be removed from the Google-owned video
sharing site. "The deal between YouTube and the BBC however, is more
interesting still, since YouTube is a global service that is completely
free to all users. Shows cannot be downloaded from YouTube. Instead,
they're watched online on the YouTube website, or the YouTube player is
embedded in other websites for no cost to the user. This is the nature of
content sharing that has seen YouTube grow from a company making no
money, to a company worth almost $2billion to Google, in less than two
years. Quite what the BBC-YouTube deal will entail is anyone's guess. It
is highly, highly unlikely to include full-length current BBC shows. What
could be possible is the addition to YouTube of much older shows, such as
classics like 'The Young Ones' or 'Faulty Towers', in an effort to boost
the shows' exposure and increase DVD sales of these shows."

for the games industry. In short, they're terrific. Software sales
totaled $549 million for the month, up a staggering 53 percent over last
year. Hardware sales were brisk as well, with the Wii selling around
436,000 units. Trailing behind were Microsoft and Sony, with 360 hitting
294,000 units sold and the PS3 selling 244,000 units. January had an
extra week, which resulted in 'inflated' sales, but even after
normalizing the data things were tremendous for the games industry in a
month where there's normally a post-holiday slump.

An anonymous reader writes "Gizmodo today posted a [0]statistical
comparison of over [1]300 HD DVD and Blu-ray reviews published at
High-Def Digest since the start of the high-def format wars last Spring.
Their findings? Overall video quality between the two formats is nearly
identical, however Blu-ray titles were slightly, but definitely superior
in audio playback, while HD DVD titles had far superior standard def
features and moderately superior high-def features."

[0]deblau writes "NASA's [1]Spitzer Space Telescope has captured for the
first time enough light from p***ts outside our solar system, known as
exop***ts, to [2]identify signatures of individual molecules in their
atmospheres. The landmark achievement is a significant step toward being
able to detect possible life on rocky exop***ts and comes years before
astronomers had anticipated."
