New €350 million fund to invest in tech firms

Index Ventures, which made a 40-fold return on its investment in the Internet phone service Skype, said Thursday it had raised €350 million, or $459 million, for its fourth venture capital fund for investing in technology companies.

The cash will be used to buy stakes in health care, information and "green" technology companies, the firm based in Geneva said.

Index gathered the money less than 18 months after it sold Skype to eBay for $2.6 billion. Venture capital firms invested €4.1 billion in European companies last year, the most in four years, according to VentureOne research in San Francisco. (Bloomberg)

Ascom chief is fired for crossing directors

ZURICH: The Swiss technology company Ascom said it was dismissing its chief executive, Rudolf Hadorn, saying he had acted against the instructions of the board.

"Last Friday the board of directors of Ascom learned that the Ascom CEO had held discussions with a group of shareholders, contrary to the board's express instructions and in violation of the organizational regulations," Ascom said.

"In violation of the principle of equal treatment for all shareholders," the company said, Hadorn had tried to change the composition and functions of the board of directors.

An Ascom spokesman declined to give further details. Hadorn could not be reached for comment. (Reuters)

Wiretap scandal widens

LOS ANGELES: U.S. prosecutors have named two more people whose phones were tapped by Anthony Pellicano, the Hollywood detective accused of a wiretapping conspiracy.

One is Paul Rusconi, the former son-in-law of a noted music and film producer, Freddy DeMann; the other is John LaViolette, a prominent entertainment lawyer.

EarthLink wins in court

WILMINGTON, Delaware: EarthLink, a leading U.S. Internet service provider, did not infringe three Inline Connection patents for high- speed Internet technology, a U.S. jury found.

Inline had sought about $28 million in damages, based on the $106.5 million EarthLink had allegedly saved by using self-installed DSL kits. (Bloomberg)

DOTMOBI, a registry for Web sites made for access via mobile phones, said that it expected to have one million customers registered for .mobi Internet domains by the end of the year. DotMobi, which was appointed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or Icann, said that it had registered about 400,000 .mobi sites since it went into operation in September.(Reuters)

SAP has extended the contract of its chief executive, Henning Kagermann, who has led the company since 1998. He is to remain in the top job at the world's largest maker of business management software until May 2009. (Bloomberg)
