| Ask Steve Kerr - Why have the Knicks improved? |
I am and have always been a New York Knicks fan. (I know, ouch.) I don't believe the garbage that everything that went wrong is Larry Brown's fault. David Lee's and
Eddy Curry's improvement (as well as Stephon Marbury's) is probably at least partly due to Brown, but overall this is not a different team. Why are we almost at 23
wins this season, when it took all season to get that many last year with a team that doesn't look significantly different? While I don't believe that it is ALL Brown's fault, I have to believe some of it is. What's your take?
Peter Yonkers, N.Y.
Yahoo! Sports NBA analyst Steve Kerr responds:
Peter, I agree with you — not everything that happened to New York last season was Larry Brown's fault. Still, there's no question that the friction between Brown, Isiah Thomas and Jim Dolan was a huge distraction for the team. I think this year's Knicks are having
more success for a couple of reasons. One, Brown's departure meant a more stable working environment. Regardless of what you think about Isiah Thomas as a coach, he's created a more relaxed atmosphere for his team and it's playing better. The other factor is that New York
has an established rotation with its players, and there seems to be a more effective pecking order. Players have figured out their roles, and with the young talent like Curry, Channing Frye,
Jamal Crawford and Lee developing, the Knicks aren't bad. Oh, and one more thing: The bar was set awfully low last season. Clearing it hasn't been that difficult.
