BELLOWS FALLS -- The Village Trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to slash one-quarter of the police coverage in the village. Facing a growing deficit in this fiscal year, and the prospect of presenting the voters with a 2008 budget that would have forced another steep tax increase, the trustees slashed the police force by 25 percent at their regular meeting Tuesday. ? BRATTLEBORO -- A jury in U.S. District Court Monday delivered a $1,160,000 judgment against a Brattleboro doctor in a medical malpractice case. Dr. John R. Bookwalter, a Brattleboro surgeon, was found to be negligent in the treatment of Charles Olanyk, 56, of Whatley, Mass., in 2001. ? Full Story

Now that we've had time to digest the numbers inside President Bush's proposed $2.9 trillion federal budget for fiscal year 2008, we see more of the same old thing -- more money for war-making and tax cuts for the rich, less money for everybody else. The president wants to spend $481 billion on defense, plus another $145 billion for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Put together, that's $628 billion for war -- and that doesn't include the $19 billion the federal Department of Energy gets for nuclear weapons research. ? Full Story
