Trasylol Tragedies
Aprotinin, sold as Trasylol, is drug given to patients to prevent excessive bleeding while undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery. New research suggests the expensive drug is linked to an increased risk of dying as long as five years after the operation. The recent, multi-center international study compared the death rates of four groups of patients who had undergone bypass surgery; Patients who had Trasylol were about 50% more likely to die in the five years after surgery than patients who received no drug. Distorting Results
GlaxoSmithKline has been accused of distorting clinical trial results of its antidepressant Seroxat, or Paxil, and covering up a link with suicide in teenagers. Despite failed clinical trials, the BBC¹s current affairs program reported that the UK¹s largest drug company tired to imply the drug worked for depressed children. It claimed GlaxoSmithKline had suppressed trial results that showed Paxil was ineffective and caused children to become suicidal. [MARKETWATCH]

Birth Control Ban
US consumer group Public Citizen is petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to ban certain types of contraceptive pills. The group wants contraceptive pills containing the synthetic progestin hormone desogestrel taken off the market because they have an increased risk of blood clots. Third generation birth control pills double the risk of blood clots and venous thrombosis without preventing pregnancy any more effectively. [BLOOMBERG]
Lucentis¹ Stroke
Genentech¹s new drug for an age-related disease that causes blindness has been linked to an elevated risk of stroke. The company¹s own large scale study of the eye drug, Lucentis, confirmed tentative findings from earlier clinical trials showing that the medication can increase the rate of strokes. Genentech has issued a Dear Health Care Provider letter outlining preliminary safety information from a planned interim analysis in an ongoing study confirming a higher stroke incidence observed in neovascular age-related macular degeneration patients taking intravitreal Lucentis. Non-Prescription Diet
The Food and Drug Administration has approved Alli to be the first diet pill that can be bought without a prescription. Alli is a reduced strength version of the prescription diet drug Xenical. It is intended for those 18 and older and users must also exercise and eat a low fat diet. GlaxoSmithKline sells the drug, known generically as orlistat, and claims it blocks the absorption of about one-quarter of all fat consumed. [CHICAGO TRIBUNE]
Topical Deaths
US health officials have warned that people who use large amounts of skin-numbing creams and lotions are at risk of irregular heartbeats, seizures, and even death. Topical anesthetics, often used in conjunction with cosmetic procedures, can be applied in amounts so large that a lethal dose of the chemicals can enter the bloodstream. Leaving the creams on the skin for long periods of time or on large portions of the body can increase the risk of seizures, coma, and death. [CNN NEWS]
Natural Hemorrhages
A new study using magnetic resonance imaging found that one infant in four delivered vaginally had at least one form of intracranial hemorrhage. Prolonged labor and assisted delivery may account for these tiny brain bleeds. Intracranial hemorrhage in full-term infants is usually associated with symptoms such as apnea, bradycardia, and seizures; larger events may cause learning disabilities or problems with motor development later in life. Babies born through caesarian delivery did not show any signs of brain hemorrhages. [FORBES]
Autism Amount
A recent federal survey found that approximately one in every 150 children in the United States has autism or a closely related disorder. Autism and the related disorders cause social, communicative, and behavioral problems and affect four times as many boys than girls. Children with symptoms may refuse to engage with people, avoid eye contact, echo words and phrases they hear, or repeat actions many times. [WASHINGTON POST]
Folic Cleft Lip
Women in their first trimester of pregnancy who take regular folic acid supplements can significantly reduce their baby's risk of developing a cleft lip. A study released by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences showed taking 0.4 milligrams of folic acid each day can reduce the risk of isolated cleft lip by 40 percent. Folic acid is a B vitamin found in green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, and certain dairy products. [MED PAGE TODAY]
Slim Sleeping
Children who get less sleep than their classmates are more likely to be overweight. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that children of elementary school age need up to 11 hours of sleep each night and teenagers require about 9.25 hours of sleep per night. Sleeping an additional hour every night reduces young children's chance of being overweight from 36% to 30%, while it reduces older children's risk from 34% to 30%. [MEDICAL NEWS TODAY]
