This week on BBC World... Week commencing 16th September 2006

  News This Week

Monday 18 September sees the launch of World News Today's second edition presented by Nik Gowing at 2300 - an hour of news and analysis of the day's events. This second edition complements the World News Today with George Alagiah at 1400.

In the news this week, Sweden goes to the polls on Sunday night in what promises to be one of the closest elections for many years. It could see the Social Democrats, who have governed Sweden for all but 10 of the 89 years since the country introduced parliamentary government, losing power to the resurgent centre-right. Also this week, BBC World will be covering the 61st session of the United Nations' General Assembly, where Zeinab Badawi will be presenting live from New York for the opening of the session, on Tuesday. Plus, BBC World will broadcast the memorial service for Steve Irwin, the Australian naturalist and star of television crocodile shows who died in a stingray attack.

Reports throughout the week

  The World Uncovered: PeaceJam

Six years in the making, PeaceJam is a harrowing and intimate look at the lives of five American teenagers growing up in a culture of violence, and the transformation that occurs when their lives are touched by both greatness and evil. Part of the Peacemakers Season, PeaceJam follows the teenagers over a six-year period as they face the stark realities of growing up in the USA today, and as they work side by side with leading Nobel Peace Prize laureates - including His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu - and learn how to become leaders in their own community.
