Cocoshimmy writes "Nvidia is facing a [0]class action lawsuit for false
advertising by not providing stable working drivers for Vista. Nvidia has
been accused of closing threads on Nvidia's forum and [1]banning users
that request a response from Nvidia, post that their Nvidia hardware does
not work under Vista, post that Nvidia software does not work under
Vista, post that Nvidia is guilty of false advertising, or threaten to
sue Nvidia. Several disgruntled users have set up their [2]own site for
discussing their legal options."

[0]AlHunt writes "According to the folks at PCWorld [1]Viacom has
publicly scolded YouTube for continuing to host throngs of Viacom videos
without permission. They are demanding that over 100,000 of its clips be
removed from the site. This includes content from Comedy Central (no more
Daily Show), MTV, Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, and VH1.
YouTube has acknowledged receiving a DMCA request from Viacom, and the
article notes what a dire precedent this could be if Google can't reach
an agreement with Viacom and its fellow IP holders."

[0]prostoalex writes "News.com.com [1]says the art of writing newspaper
headlines is changing due to reliance on search engines for traffic to
newspaper archives. Forget about clever puns, double entendres and witty
analogies: 'News organizations that generate revenue from advertising are
keenly aware of the problem and are using coding techniques and training
journalists to rewrite the print headlines, thinking about what the story
is about and being as clear as possible.' One big winner for now is
[2]Boston.com, The Boston Globe property, which 'had training sessions
with copy editors and the night desk for the newspaper to enforce
Web-optimized keyword-rich headlines suitable for search engine
queries.'" Update: 10/30 14:1 GMT by [3]KD : Corrected mis-attributed
ownership: boston.com is owned by the Boston Globe, not the Boston
Herald.

el crowbar sent us a link to an MSNBC article detailing [0]NASA's plans
for a moon base. The permanently staffed structure could begin
construction sometime in 2010, with six-month duty rotations the norm by
2025. Interestingly, the space agency is looking far afield for technical
expertise. Consultants on the project include individuals from
Caterpillar, Norcat, Boeing, and other manufacturing concerns. Right now
the only detail for placement and purpose is 'on the rim of a crater near
one of the poles', but the article outlines a few other ideas that
enterprising individuals have in mind for a moon base. Besides helium-3
mining and lunar hotels, do you have any good ideas for a moon base
startup?

Hymer writes "Reuters is reporting that [0]Novell may be banned from
selling Linux. In the wake of the (much maligned) Novell/Microsoft deal,
the Free Software Foundation is reviewing Novell's right to sell the
operating system at all. The foundation controls the rights to key parts
of the operating system, and council for the organization said that 'the
community wants to interfere any way it can' with the Novell business
arrangement. No decision has yet been reached, but one should be made in
the next two weeks." Is this a measured response, or an over-reaction to
the Novell/Microsoft arrangement?

JMB wrote us with a dire warning, as reported by the San Jose Mercury
News. Apple is cautioning its Windows-using iTunes customers to [0]steer
clear of Vista until the next iTunes update. The reason for this is a bit
puzzling. Apparently, if you try to 'safely remove' your iPod from a
Vista-installed PC, there's a chance you may corrupt the little music
player. They also claim that songs may not play, and contacts may not
sync with the device. Apple went so far as to release a [1]detailed
support document on the subject, which assures users that a new
Vista-compatible version of the software will be available in a few
weeks. Is this just some very creative FUD? If it is not who do you think
is 'at fault' here, Microsoft or Apple?

small-scale programming projects can take years to complete, one
programmer is often better than two, and the meaning of 'Rosenberg's
Law.' After almost 50 years, the state of the art is still pretty darn
bad. His point is that as long as you're trying to do something that has
already been done, then you have an adequate frame of reference to
estimate how long it will take/cost. But if software is at all
interesting, it's because no one else has done it before."
