ancientribe writes "Bruce Schneier is at it again: the security icon
shares his latest research and insight on the [0]interplay between
psychology and security in this article in Dark Reading. The focus of
Schneier's latest research is on brain heuristics and perceptions of
security, which may be the basis for the best-selling author's next book.
His goal for the topic, which he'll be presenting at the RSA Conference
next week, is to focus on how people think, and feel, about security, and
how neuroscience can help explain how our perception of risk doesn't
always match reality."

An anonymous reader asks: "I work at a [0]large hosting company in Texas,
and recently decided to go work for a smaller competitor. I had a great
relationship with my employer and wanted to leave on good terms, and I
hadn't signed any [1]non-compete or [2]employment agreements . I felt my
old company had just gotten too large and I didn't like working there
anymore, so I gave them two weeks notice in writing. They were really
upset when I insisted on leaving and one week into my last two weeks the
V.P. of Sales told me the company was suing me for leaving, and they were
also suing my new employer for hiring me. I was shocked, and they then
escorted me out of the building. Has anybody ever heard of this
happening? Do they have any legal basis for suing me?" It shouldn't have
to be said that seeking professional legal representation, in such a
situation, is the first thing one should do.

An anonymous reader slipped us a link to the Seattle PI article
discussing [0]Bryan Lee's departure from Microsoft. The former business
development VP for the Zune has parted ways with the company for personal
reasons now that 'Zune was launched and on track'. This means that J.
Allard will be stepping up into fill the void. Allard was instrumental in
bringing the first Xbox console to market, and was the VP in charge of
technical matters for the Zune. An analyst with Gartner is quoted as
saying this move means not all is well in the land of Zune, but a rumour
on the CrunchGear site indicates that Microsoft is planning on stepping
things up later this year with a [1]Zune cellphone. A smartphone designed
to compete with Apple in that market it would seem, despite whatever
problems may be going on, the company is still rather fond of the strange

groups has the Sakai open source consortium more than a little bit

the only one using the iPhone name, [2]they're trying to use it just a

[0]alphadogg submitted a piece at the NetworkWorld site about the IEEE's
efforts to introduce [1]energy efficiency to Ethernet use. The group's
Energy Efficient Ethernet group is looking into methods by which
standards can be tweaked to encourage power savings. Current plans
include ways to make computers 'choosier' about what level of bandwidth
they're using. Idle systems would only run at 10Mbps, while email might
draw 100Mbs, and scale up to 1000Mbps for large downloads and streaming
video. The group is planning to discuss changes to the Ethernet link and
higher layers. No restrictions are planned for device manufacturers,
although the article suggests some companies might try to use energy
efficiency as a competitive advantage. The EEE group estimates some $450
million a year could be saved via the use of energy efficient Ethernet
technology.

Though it would be hard to judge by past reviews, I really do like simple
games. The straightforward nature of Burnout Revenge is, in my mind, one
of the best ways you can present a game. It's with a decided note of
frustration, then, that I have to report my distaste for Capcom's latest
offering - Lost P***t: Extreme Condition. Demos for this title have been
downloaded endlessly since last year's E3, and in the format of a
one-level demo there's a lot to like. How can you go wrong with the
formula of a devastated Earth, giant bugs, and mechs? By fronting the
game with an unlikable protagonist and following up with AI that
alternates between mindless and cheap, Capcom fails to deliver on the
promise of any of those concepts. Read on for my impressions of another
simple game that I really wanted to like ... and don't.

from [2]SourceForge.net. A ComputerWorld article details the history of
the project, discussing the work of companies like CleverAge and
AztecSoft, as well as community efforts to bring this project to
realization."

[0]Joel Keller writes "When I was at the Television Critics Association
press tour earlier last month, [1]I briefly talked to Matt Groening about
Futurama's comeback. I posted the interview to TV Squad a couple of days
ago. The man behind the Simpsons and Futurama talks about the latter's
comeback, the fun of doing sci-fi in a comedy format, and a few words
about the first episode to air on Comedy Central."

xtracto writes "I just returned from buying certain Linux magazine. While
looking at the 'Computing' stand in the library, and right after I
grabbed a copy of the Linux magazine, a guy asked me if I used Linux.
After that, the man told me he had tried to use Linux, but he had found
it difficult. I told him the first things that came to my mind: that it
depended on the distribution (he tried Kubuntu). I recommended him to
look for a Linux User Group near his hometown (he told me he didn't live
near a city). What would you tell these kinds of people? Not so long ago,
and to my surprise, a relative who is completely computer illiterate
started talking about Linux, but the general thought is that 'it is
harder than Windows'. How do you advocate Linux to people who are more
comfortable using Windows?"

[0]prostoalex writes "With municipal Wi-Fi taking off and startups
[1]distributing free wireless routers for those willing to share their
Internet connections, Wi-Fi phones or hybrid phones with both cellular
and Wi-Fi access, are attracting interest. Dr. Dobb's Journal [2]runs a
review of [3]6 wireless phone devices available on the market today. The
cheapest ones start around $80, but lock you into T-Mobile branded
hotspots. The more expensive ones, [4]Sony Mylo in particular, offer
support for 3rd party clients, such as Skype, GTalk and Yahoo!
Messenger."
