Yes, the storm that howled through northern Europe last week managed to make it over the Alps, bringing freezing temperatures, and, more importantly, water. Snow even, and the traffic advisories are telling people to pack chains if they venture any distance. It may not last, but it is nice, and every drop now means a little less dust next summer.

L'Arrosto morto: Tuscan Stovetop Roasting
The best way to roast a cut of meat is in a wood-fired oven, but for most of us this is not practical, and we may be planning to use the oven we do have for something else. The solution? roast your meat on the stove top, using the arrosto morto technique. It's easy and the warmth will spread out from the kitchen.

Risotto Col Tastasal
This is a salami-maker's treat: when you're making up salami, or sausages, you do want to be sure you've got the seasoning right before stuffing 50 pounds of meat into the casings. There are several ways, one being to use some of the mixture to make a risotto. If you aren't making your own, use mild uncased sausage meat from your market.

Braised Beef with Polenta Gnocchi
A good beef stew is a wonderful winter treat, and it becomes even nicer if you accompany it with polenta.

1) On About: Chicken Soup for the Cold - Chicken Soup Recipes
"Chicken soup may well be the ultimate comfort food", writes Peggy Trowbridge, and has an impressive collection of chicken soup tips and recipes to back her up.

2) In Italian: Taormina
Looking at the dusting of white on the hilltops is nice, but it's also nice to remember that in a few months things will be very different. Taormina would be a nice place to be in a few month's time.

3) The Storm, or Stolt Surf in the North Pacific
I much enjoyed reading The Perfect Storm a few years ago. Didn't like the movie as much, because the storm didn't quite look right. These guys went through something very nearly as bad, fortunately (for them) on a much bigger boat. I don't know if I'd have been futzing with my camera out there, but I'm glad Karsten Petersen was.
