Choosing Traits
A controversial embryo bank in San Antonio enables parents to choose physical and personality traits to create designer babies. The Abraham Center of Life allows clients to review details of egg and sperm donors including race, education, appearance and personality. Single women and infertile couples can choose their preferences and create a baby with predetermined eye color, hair color, and other characteristics. [WASHINGTON POST]

Cold Children
According to a new investigation conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over-the-counter cough and cold medications can be harmful, even deadly, to children under two years old. Medications containing pseudoephedrine have never been shown to have any beneficial effect on children less than 2 years of age and are linked to hundreds of emergency room visits each year. Weighing Warfarin
Warfarin, best known as Coumadin, is an anticoagulant used to thin the blood and prevent strokes. However, the rate of cerebral hemorrhage associated with use of this drug quintupled during the 1990s and increased more than tenfold in those over the age of 80. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati suggest patients should weigh the beneficial effects of Warfarin in preventing ischemic strokes with the risks for intracerebral hemorrhage. Milky Tea
Adding milk to a cup of tea can destroy its ability to protect against heart disease. On its own, black tea significantly improves the ability of arteries to relax and expand to keep blood pressure healthy. Unfortunately, by adding milk, you are also adding proteins called caseins which interact with tea pigments and block the healthy effects. Second to water, tea is the world's most common drink. Biased Beverages
Research about milk, soft drinks, and juice may be affected by the source of the sponsored study. The popular beverages are all highly controversial, highly profitable, and heavily marketed to children. Researchers from the Children's Hospital in Boston found that studies funded by industry were four to eight times more likely to show bias in favor of sponsors' products than studies that did not receive industry funding. Preteen Precautions
Researchers at the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute have found girls who are overweight before becoming a teenager are more likely to be obese and have a higher risk of heart disease as women. The 12 year study showed 7% of white girls were overweight in their pre-teens, rising to 10% in adulthood and 17% of black girls were overweight at age 9, reaching to 24% in adulthood. Being overweight as a pre-teen makes it up to 30 times more likely of being obese as an adult and is associated with an increased risk of heart disease. [FORBES]

Depressing Migraines
A recent study by US scientists reveals women who suffer from migraine or chronic headaches are the most likely to suffer depression and other somatic symptoms. Women who have more than 15 headaches a month are 4 times more likely to suffer depression and 3 times more likely to have somatic symptoms than those who have fewer headaches. Chronic headaches, disabling headaches, and severe somatic symptoms seem to work synergistically to increase the risk of depression. [REUTERS]

Two Tongue Dementia
Researchers in Canada claim speaking two languages can delay the onset of dementia by four years. Bilingualism may help the brain build a cognitive reserve, which may provide protection against the onset of dementia. Being fluent in two or more languages may help postpone cognitive decline because of the mental agility necessary to use both languages in everyday life. [GLOBE AND MAIL]

STD Codes
Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that can cause a painful Trichomoniasis infection in both men and women. There are 7.4 million new cases of Trichomoniasis each year, and it is the most common curable sexually transmitted disease in young women who are sexually active. Experts from the US and UK have recently mapped the genome of the creature and will work to offer better treatments. [BBC NEWS]

Reintegrating Inmates
A study from Washington State found newly released inmates were almost 13 times more likely to die within the first two weeks of their release than the general public. Drug overdoses, homicide, and suicide were the leading causes of death. Ex-convicts are very vulnerable to reintegrating back into society; they must find housing, a source of income, and contact family members. Scientists are calling for better transition programs for inmates prior to their release and after they have been reintroduced into society. [SEATTLE TIMES]
