[0]Roland Piquepaille writes "Ice has covered Greenland for millions of
years. So what's hidden under this ice cap? Mountains and valleys? Rivers
and lakes? Of course, we might know it sooner than we would have liked if
the ice covering Greenland continues to melt. But researchers from Ohio
State University have decided that they wanted to know it next year and
have developed [1]a radar to reveal views of land beneath polar ice.
Their first tests of this new radar, which helps them to catch 3-D images
of the ground under the ice, took place in May 2006. The next images will
be shot in April 2007. Here are [2]some images of the new GISMO device
and what it can do."

friedo writes "After five years of research, the Food and Drug
Administration has decided that [0]meat and milk from cloned animals is
safe to eat. From the article: 'The government believes meat and milk
from cattle, swine and goat clones is as safe to eat as the food we eat
every day, said Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA Center for
Veterinary Medicine. Meat and milk from the offspring of clones is also
safe, the agency concluded. Officials said they did not have enough
information to decide whether food from sheep clones is safe. If food
from clones is indistinguishable, FDA doesn't have the authority to
require labels, Sundlof said. Companies trying to distance themselves
from cloning must be careful with their wording, he added.'"

Virtual_Raider writes "Wired is carrying a story about a method developed
by security researchers to [0]identify computers hiding behind anonymity
services. From the article: 'His victim is the Onion Router, or "Tor" ?€? a
sophisticated privacy system that lets users surf the web anonymously.
Tor encrypts a user's traffic, and bounces it through multiple servers,
so the final destination doesn't know where it came from. Murdoch set up
a Tor network at Cambridge to test his technique, which works like this:
If an attacker wants to learn the IP address of a hidden server on the
Tor network, he'll suddenly request something difficult or intensive from
that server. The added load will cause it to warm up.'"

odie_q writes "It has long been known that the [0]Toxoplasma gondii
parasite [1]alters its host's behavior, but now it seems [2]the way it
alters it depends on the sex of the host. From the article: 'A common
parasite can increase a women's attractiveness to the opposite sex but
also make men more stupid, an Australian researcher says ... Infected men
have lower IQs, achieve a lower level of education and have shorter
attention spans. They are also more likely to break rules and take risks,
be more independent, more anti-social, suspicious, jealous and morose,
and are deemed less attractive to women. On the other hand, infected
women tend to be more outgoing, friendly, more promiscuous, and are
considered more attractive to men compared with non-infected controls.'"

[0]mrspin writes "With Macworld Expo just over a week away, many expect
Apple CEO Steve Jobs to announce further details (and the availability)
of the company's yet to be released set-top-box, codenamed iTV. Powered
by something similar to Apple's Front Row media center software, the iTV
is designed to get the media content that's housed on a Mac (music,
movies, and photos), streamed to the living room television. However,
with its built-in wireless networking (suspected to be the faster
802.11n), why not bypass the Mac and have the iTV connect directly to the
Internet? The combination of iTunes and DRM-free MP3s provided the
'killer app' for the iPod. YouTube could [1]well do the same for Apple's
soon-to-be released set-top box."

Christine Jennings [0]has no right to examine the source code that runs
the electronic voting machines at the center of a disputed Southwest
Florida congressional race. From the article: 'The ruling Friday from
Judge Gary prevents for now the Jennings camp from being able to use the
programming code to try to show voting machines used in Sarasota County
malfunctioned. Jennings claims that an unusually large number of
undervotes (ballots that didn't show a vote) recorded in the race implies
the machines lost the votes.'"

[0]Philias writes "Although Battlestar Galactica has been going down in
ratings and has yet to get picked up for another season, the sales of its
DVDs has got Universal thinking of a Direct-To-Video Movie.
GeekMonthly.com is reporting that [1]plans are afoot for a film that will
bridge the gap between Galactica and the new spinoff 'Caprica.' The film
would be shot in March during the usual hiatus between seasons. The big
difference between this and the mini-series and other seasons would be
that this would be sold on DVD before being aired on the SciFi channel."

[0]knight17 writes "This year was a really good year for space exploring
nations, but Russians may be the most happiest among them, because they
[1]grabbed a huge 45% of the spacecraft launching market this year. The
coming year is also very good for Russian space programs, since next year
they will finish the [2]GLONASS navigation project. The US is in second
place, and China & Japan in third with six launches each. The Russian
officials said that the launches of spacecrafts will be lesser than what
this year has been seen."

dpbsmith writes "The Detroit Free Press reports that [0]a Windows
Automotive software suite named Sync will be featured in some cars
available Spring 2007, all 2008 Ford models, and Lincoln and Mercury
models later. The software does not, apparently, run the engine or do
anything directly connected with transportation. It will, rather, allow
the user to 'use their vehicle as a computer in key ways, such as
hands-free cell phone calls or downloading music or receiving e-mail.'
Bill Ford and Bill Gates were reported as saying that having
high-definition screens in vehicles, speech recognition, cameras, digital
calendars and navigation equipment with directions and road conditions
will set car companies apart from their competitors in the future. 'There
are going to be those who have it and those who don't. And even those who
get it later are going to be a generation behind,' Ford said."

| Looking Beyond Vista to Fiji and Vienna |

[0]Vinit wrote in with a n article that describes Microsoft's strategy
for future versions of Windows. It begins: "As we all know that Microsoft
Vista was originally scheduled to be released in 2003, after two years of
Windows XP, but it got delayed by over five years due to various reasons.
Definitely, Vista is very very improved OS over the previous versions,
but the delayed in the launch has cost Microsoft, billions of dollars.
Now the question at the moment is, what exactly after Vista? Microsoft
can't afford to wait another five years for an operating system. People
are becoming more aware of the choices they have, and Linux is no longer
a hobbyist OS, and that day isn't far away when it becomes simple enough
to be a viable alternative to Windows. The competition is fierce. That is
why, to stay at the top, [1]Microsoft has planned a 'Vista R2', codenamed
'Fiji' which will be released some time in 2008. And after Fiji, there
will be Windows 'Vienna'. Windows Fiji, will not be a totally different
OS from Vista; but it will be an add-on. Whereas Vienna will be totally
different from Vista."
