Good chippers make a
smooth rhythmic motion, letting the ball get in the way
of the clubhead. Poor chippers focus on hitting the
ball, so much so that they flinch as the club approaches
impact. This sudden movement of the hands and wrist,
which causes thin or fat contact, is chiping's version
of the yips.
If you are afflicted by the "chipping yips" try hitting
the shot while looking at the target (first in practice,
then in play). Since the swing is so short, you won't
have trouble hitting the ball, and because you won't
know when contact will occur, it will take the flinch
out of your motion. You'll make a smooth stroke and
produce a crisp strike.
