Mike Page, Editor, writes:

This newsletter will be the last one for 2006. The next edition will
be on January 8 2007. As 2006 nears its end, we will have passed the
40,000 story level and if current trends continue through 2007, I
imagine that the Manufacturingtalk website will top 50,000 by the end
of next year.

If you look at the 'Industry News' section, you will see that the UK
government is finally pushing the idea that apprenticeship schemes are
'with it'. Well, remembering the promises when the UK's socialist
political party came to power some years ago - that it would support
manufacturing industry - it has only taken a few years to actually do
something about it. I still feel that the industry has yet to convince
youngsters that engineering and manufacturing are good things to
pursue. A harder task is to convince them that they can earn good
money - in some areas.

Maybe parents should give their youngsters construction sets (like
French 'Meccano' and Lego's technical sets) this Christmas instead of
music systems, mobile phones and computerised game systems. One has to
try and reintroduce the 'culture' of engineering and manufacturing
into areas so devastated by previous UK national policies.

On a much brighter note, it will be time to have a holiday and
celebrate it in what ever fashion pleases you best - be it religious,
lots of fun or just eating and drinking. Wishing you all the very best
'Season's Greetings' and a very Happy Christmas.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes
