Conflicting Stent Reports
The US Food and Drug Administration put together a panel of experts to look into the safety concerns surrounding drug coated stents. Recent research revealed drug coated stents increased the odds of blood clot, heart attacks and death when compared with bare metal stents. The panel recommended that the agency issue new warnings to doctors and patients that the devices' safety has not been established except for relatively low risk patients. [WASHINGTON POST]
If you or a loved one has a drug eluting stent and have suffered from thrombosis, blood clots or a heart attack, please fill out this [FORM] to join a possible class action against these allegedly harmful devices.
Antidepressing Youths
Treatment with antidepressants increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in patients age 24 and younger. A US advisory panel suggested to the Food and Drug Administration that such information must be added to current "black box" warnings of antidepressants including Zoloft and Prozac. The warnings should also note that untreated depression also can lead to serious consequences including suicide. [MSNBC]
Breast Cancer STDs
Researchers from the University of New South Wales have found the same form of the human papillomavirus associated with cervical cancer in almost half the breast tumor samples they tested. The results suggest that breast cancer could be sexually transmitted and could be spread through sexual activity or during showers or baths. [ALL HEADLINE NEWS]
Year Round Oral
A new year-round oral contraceptive pill eliminates menstrual cycles and appears to be safe and effective. Lybrel combines levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol to safely eliminate menstruation in most women; it is specifically designed to remove the fertility cycle. Wyeth has applied to have Lybrel licensed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and hopes to have it on the market by next year. [REUTERS]
Feeding Epidurals
Mothers who have epidurals to relieve pain during delivery have more difficulty breastfeeding and are twice as likely to give up the feeding method within six months compared to mothers who give birth naturally. For an epidural, a catheter is inserted into the spine to infuse pain killing drugs which numbs sensation to the lower body. Unfortunately, babies may absorb these powerful chemicals through the placenta and experts believe this affects the babies' sucking reflex. [TIMES ONLINE]
Sudden Adult Death
Experts warn that the rate of sudden unexplained deaths is around eight times higher than previously thought. Thousands of people may die every year from sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS) which is linked to a genetic heart defect. The average age of a SADS victim is 32 and 63% are male. [DAILY MAIL]
Intelligent Vegetarians
A team of vegetarians won the BBC Test the Nation to achieve the highest overall IQ score. Researchers from the University of Southampton found vegetarians are more thoughtful about what they eat and bright children are more likely to reject meat and opt to become vegetarians when they mature. The health advantages of having a high IQ can be explained because vegetarian diets are associated with lower risk factors for heart disease. [BLOOMBERG]
Inside Fat
Many slim people are storing dangerous layers of fat inside their bodies and while they may look healthier, their health is often far more at risk than those who are obviously overweight. Magnetic resonance images revealed many people who look slim carry large amounts of fat located around important organs such as their heart and liver that can eventually lead to serious health problems. Shrinking Risks
A recent British study reveals men who lose a significant amount of height as they age are at increased risk for heart disease and death. Height loss typically occurs with other evidence of frailty such as loss of mobility, weight loss, breathing trouble and arthritis; these factors underlie both osteoporosis and heart disease. The study found those who had lost 3 centimeters or more of height were about 64% more likely to die or suffer coronary heart disease than men who lost less than 1 centimeter of height. [FORBES]
Noisy Toys
Audiologists note that prolonged exposure to noise above 85 decibels can lead to gradual hearing loss in children. Research from a charity for the deaf warns that children risk damage to their hearing or even immediate loss of hearing from toys widely available this Christmas. Almost all toys tested produced noise levels above the recommended safety limit when held close to the ear and 50% had levels above recommended safety limits when measured nine inches away.
