Ian Clay, editor, writes:
'Tis the season to be jolly! Well absolutely, but as Croner point out
(see item 10 below) the Christmas season is also fraught with
potential dangers for a business, both political and otherwise.
I have been surprised over the last few weeks to see my inbox fill up
with messages from legal firms, trade unions and consultancies warning
business owners, managers and operators about the potential dangers
lurking in the festive season. We have been warned about the potential
for harassment lawsuits and who is responsible if an employee has too
much to drink at the office Christmas party and drives home?
Some of these warnings are more applicable to the industrial
environment than others but, as with everything that we discuss at
Industrialsafetytalk a common sense approach always brings the best
results.
One area that I have always believed in strongly relates to the
Christmas party and Christmas presents from the firm. In my view if
the company you work for is willing to throw a Christmas party,
however modest, then employees should attend with good grace and
behave appropriately. As for Christmas gifts (again mentioned in the
Croner story) that these should be turned in to any sort of issue
just seems beyond the bounds of credulity.
I'd be please to hear from any of our readers who have thoughts upon
or examples of any of the above. Until then, as this is the last
newsletter from me this year, I would just like to take the
opportunity to wish all readers a very happy and safe holiday season.
I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds of
others on our website and more being added daily, so do take a look if
you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

[3] BIGGER RANGE OF SAFETY LIGHT CURTAINS AVAILABLE
(Pilz Automation Technology, 30 Nov 2006)
Pilz is expanding its PSENopt family of safety light curtains, making
it one of the most comprehensive ranges on the market. A new addition
to the PSENopt range is a series of light curtains that can be used in
L or T arrangements for muting in one or two directions, and customers
can select the number of muting sensors. Fixed and floating blanking
can also be used with a number of the new models of light curtain.
Another exciting development is cascaded light curtains that can be
used in a master-and-slave configuration. If required, Pilz also
offers application support and advice on product selection, as well as
ESPE (electrosensitive protective equipment) inspections to ensure
that light curtains cannot be defeated and that they are correctly
positioned in relation to the mechanical hazards - for reasons of both
safety and productivity.

[4] ATEX COMPLIANT WEIGHBRIDGE FOR HAZARDOUS AREAS
(Avery Weigh-Tronix, 30 Nov 2006)
Avery Weigh-Tronix is launching an ATEX compliant weighbridge for use
in hazardous areas. The weighbridges can be used in zone 1 and 2
areas. The company provides a full design, installation and
maintenance service for weighbridges operating in hazardous areas. A
retrofit service is also available for existing Avery Weigh-Tronix
weighbridges that need to meet the new regulations. The new
weighbridge uses a fully ATEX compliant analogue load cell. In
addition, the deck now uses stainless steel metal stops for the deck
to prevent any chance of a spark being produced. All the electronics,
such as indicators, used with the bridge are also fully compliant.

[5] AFFORDABLE SOLUTIONS FOR BETTER FORKLIFT SAFETY.
(Scafftag, 28 Nov 2006)
One company that has been proactive in the field of forklift safety
has been IKEA. With the help of Scafftag's innovative tagging systems
they have helped prevent further accidents and loss of life. The IKEA
store in Wembley has adopted the Forkliftag which serves as a daily
preventative safety management system for forklift trucks. It
instantly visually identifies the status of the forklift and instils a
pre-shift inspection and maintenance routine of the vehicle. The
Forkliftag includes a holder which is permanently fixed onto the
vehicle and an insert which is an easy to follow checklist. This
checklist needs to be completed daily by the first user or at the
start of each shift to ensure the vehicle is safe to use. Should there
be any query about the status of the vehicle, or if any element fails
inspection, the insert is simply removed, instantly displaying Do Not
Use. For a complete forklift safety management solution, Scafftag
provides the Black Book which is the perfect complement to the
Forkliftag. Along with easy to follow guidelines on complying with
legislation pertaining to forklifts and conducting a risk assessment,
The Black Book will provide all necessary inspection records to
establish an effective information management system.

System for Mobile Communication) network SBES offers the GPS (Global
Positioning System) and satellite communication version of Responder
when the application requires it. The Responder system, housed in a
backpack, helps protect lone workers anywhere and at any time, whether

[8] SAFETY STANDARDS TOO OFTEN OVERLOOKED
(Siemens Automation and Drives, 11 Dec 2006)
Safety experts at Siemens Automation and Drives are warning that
continual failure of some manufacturers to meet BS EN418 safety
standards for E-Stop devices, is putting lives at risk. Recent reports
of malfunctions on a variety of emergency stop buttons have reached
the company, increasing an already growing concern as to the safety of
OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) across the UK. The warning was
given further impetus with the recent product quality recall action by
a well-known supplier. A central failure in the latching function (non
tease-proof) from their listed 'push-pull' E-stop devices ensures
non-compliance with BS EN418 and more alarmingly the possibility that
machinery could restart with panel builders still inside!

[9] HSC AND HSE ON THE WAY TO MERGER
(HSE Health and Safety Executive, 07 Dec 2006)
The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) today published a public
consultation document seeking views on merging HSC and Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) into a single health and safety authority. HSC
believes that merger with HSE will modernise our corporate governance
and provide a stronger voice for health and safety. As part of this,
the consultation discusses how the HSC would become the governing body
of the new authority, retaining its current independence and links
with stakeholders while strengthening its capacity to challenge and
support delivery.

[10] BOSSES GIVE COLD SHOULDER TO CHRISTMAS GIFTS
(Croner, 05 Dec 2006)
Over half of employees will not be receiving any Christmas cheer from
their bosses this year, with 57 per cent of those surveyed by experts
in workplace issues, Croner, resigned to having Scrooge for a boss.
And those employers that do try to provide a suitable corporate
stocking filler can end up with eggnog on their faces by choosing
inappropriate, ill thought out or just downright cheap gifts.
