Stents Questioned
Patients with drug eluting stents need to stay on Plavix to reduce the chances of developing dangerous blood clots. However, the anti-clotting medication costs $4 per day and no one knows how safe the long term effects are for stent patients. Nearly 3 million people in the United States now carry one of these devices, but a number of studies have suggested that coated stents have long term risks of thrombotic artery blockages that can cause heart attacks. [WASHINGTON POST]
If you or a loved one has a drug eluting stent and have suffered from thrombosis, blood clots or a heart attack, please fill out this [FORM] to join a possible class action against these allegedly harmful devices.
SSRI Attempted Suicide
Researchers from Finland found selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Celexa, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft increase the risk of suicide attempts. Concern that SSRI antidepressants might increase the risk for suicide among children and adolescents have led to US FDA mandated black box label warnings on SSRIs that alert physicians and patients to the possibility of suicidal behavior. Taco E. Coli
An outbreak of E. coli bacteria has sickened more than 121 people on Long Island as well as in New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Utah. Officials are investigating the Taco Bell restaurants where some of the victims ate from November 20 to 25, 2006. Several people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be fatal or cause permanent damage to the kidneys. As a precautionary measure, several Taco Bell restaurants have been asked to close for inspection purposes. [NEW YORK TIMES]
Free EC Day
After two years, the Food and Drug Administration decided to make Plan B morning after pills available over the counter to women 18 years and older. Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation offered free and discounted emergency contraception (EC) to increase awareness of this important backup method of contraception. If taken correctly and within three days of unprotected sex or failed contraception, a woman can reduce her chances of getting pregnant by 89%. [ABC NEWS]
Chewable Contraceptives
Now available on pharmacy shelves are spearmint flavored chewable birth control pills. Warner Chilcott launched Femcon Fe to offer a new option to appeal to their younger demographic and for women who do not like swallowing pills. The little tablet contains all of the hormones found in a birth control pill, comes in a 28 day cycle, and costs $44 a month. [SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER]
Thin Miscarriages
Underweight women are 72% more likely to miscarry in the first three months of pregnancy than women of normal weight. A diet which includes fruit, vegetables, and chocolate helped reduce the risk of miscarriage and taking supplements with Folate or iron can also reduce the risk of miscarriage by 50%. Researchers also found women who suffered from nausea and sickness during their first trimester are less likely to miscarry. [FORBES]
Trans Fat Ban
The New York City Board of Health has approved the first US mandated ban on trans fat in cooking oils. The ban requires the city's 24,000 fast food chains and mom-and-pop diners to eliminate the artery clogging substance. Trans fats increase the risk of heart disease and stroke by increasing levels of bad cholesterol known as LDL. [BLOOMBERG]
Hormonal Cancer
Research scientists have found significant reductions in both the use of hormone replacement therapies and the incidence of breast cancer. Previous studies showed long term use of estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy was linked to increased risk of breast cancer. This new evidence supports the theory that women who discontinue hormone therapy use may reduce their chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer. [SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE]
Baby Breathing
Many parents put their young babies in car seats and take a drive to help the little ones fall asleep. A recent warning from a New Zealand pediatricians report notes allowing babies six months and younger to fall asleep unrestrained in an upright position puts infants at risk of obstructing their airways, which could endanger their lives. The longer babies are left in car seats, the more predisposed they are to have partial airway blockage. [DAILY MAIL]
Scale Steppers
Adolescent girls who regularly step on scales are more likely to binge eat and gain weight. Teenage girls who weighed themselves frequently tended to engage in harmful weight management tactics, such as binge eating, smoking, vomiting, taking diet pills, using laxatives and skipping meals. The Minnesota study discovered that weight gain was twice as high in those who regularly checked the scale. [INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE]
