Hot News Headlines
Which desktop and laptop systems does Computer World recommend in its 2006 Holday Gift Guide? The iMac — “a space-saving, multimedia-savvy, user-friendly computer that offers the best out-of-box experience of any consumer system on the market.” — and the MacBook Pro — ”Why buy one laptop when you can get two for virtually the same price?”

Kyle Monson offers this suggestion for PC Magazine's "Daily Gift Idea": "The new iPod shuffle is a clip-on MP3 player that's a perfect fit for a morning jog, a short commute, or a Christmas stocking. It's got a sturdy aluminum case, comes with 1GB of storage, and costs $79 if you order it online from www.apple.com."

“And then there’s the design of the thing,” notes technology pundit and recent switcher Thomas Hawk. “I never in a million years would have thought that the design of a laptop would even matter to me at all. It’s not about the aesthetics of a machine. It’s what it does for you right? Well, maybe. But this machine is damn sexy. I love the way that the keyboard is lit at night so that I can work in the dark. I love that glassy screen. There is something about the feel of the polished aluminum as I hold, no caress, the thing in my hands. ... And yes, I even love that glowing little Apple logo on the back of the case that I’ve scoffed at ! in the past at the various conferences and tech meetups that I’ve gone to.”

Shooting for MVP

Aperture & Zagaris

He’s in every play of the game. Takes the field both offensively and defensively. And wears the uniforms of both the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland A’s.

And as the team photographer for both franchises, Michael Zagaris racks up some pretty impressive numbers by the time his seasons end, scooping up more than 160,000 photographs a year.

But when it came to finding a photo he sorely needed, Zagaris struck out most of the time. Until, that is, he began scoring with Aperture. “I really don’t have time to pick through my archives to find a shot. I have to make calls, I have to be shooting. With Aperture, I can instantly bring up any shot.” What’s more, thanks to the new plug-in architecture built into Aperture 1.5, Zagaris can even export photos from his archives directly to PhotoShelter and publish them nearly instantaneously.

Brewing Up a Great Presentation

Sustainable Harvest Together with his Mac and Keynote, David Griswold, the founder of Sustainable Harvest, travels to Tanzania, Costa Rica, Ethiopa, and wherever else he can find exquisite coffee beans. There, he explains the mission of Sustainable Harvest, one of North America’s leading importers of organically grown coffee.

“We’ll take a digital projector, show the presentation anywhere—on a wall, in a church. The farmers think it’s great. We explain our relationship business model, and they see how it jives with how they do business.” Back home, he uses Keynote once again to successfully explain the benefits of using fair trade organic coffee to the nation’s largest coffee vendors.

“I gave a presentation a couple of years ago in front of 3,000 people,” Griswold recalls. “Afterward, someone from a huge, well-known coffee company asked, ‘How did you do that?’”

Keynote,” Griswold perked up.
