it's a terribly busy time of the year. But you might want to

"I have to say I'm so glad I purchased your DebtIntoWealth
System! I was skeptical at first, so I went to the website.
It sounded good, so I figured "what the heck," I'll give it
a try. My goal was to pay off $5000 in credit card debt and
a car loan so I could buy a new home, and get me and my 4
girls out of our 2-bedroom apartment. It worked! It's now 9
months later and ALL of my debt is paid off, and I just
signed a contract on a new 5-bedroom house! There is no
better feeling than to have NO debts, and a savings account
too! Thanks to your system, my family is going to have a
better life by not being enslaved to debt."

Double (or Triple!) Your Charitable Donations
by Jessica Brown
Taking advantage of corporate matching gifts programs
As the holidays approach, mailboxes around the country begin
to overflow with letters from financially-strapped
organizations requesting year-end donations for worthy causes.
The heart-wrenching letters cover everything from domestic
violence prevention and medical research to rainforest
protection and drug rehabilitation programs. We wish that we
could support them all, but financial resources are tight. So
we do our research and respond to only a few of the
organizations, wishing that we could add a few extra zeros as
we write the checks.
But wait! Before you seal and stamp the envelope, take a few
minutes to find out whether your employer has a matching gifts
program. For many people, this is a simple way to double or
even triple the amount of their donations, without breaking
the family budget.
Many employers sponsor a corporate matching gifts program,
through which they offer to "match" their employees' eligible
charitable contributions. If your employer offers a 1:1 match,
for every dollar that you donate, your company will also
donate one dollar, thereby doubling the size of your donation.
Although less common, some companies even offer a 2:1 match,
which can triple the size of your donation.
The easiest way to determine whether your employer sponsors a
matching gifts program is to ask someone in the human
resources department. However, you can also search online at
www.matchinggifts.com/demo.cfm, where you will find a database
of corporate matching gifts programs, including basic
information about the programs' restrictions and procedures.
Most companies have established minimum and maximum donation
amounts for their matching gifts programs. The range usually
starts at $25 and is capped around $4,000 or $5,000, but this
can vary widely depending on the size of the company.
Matching gift programs also carry restrictions on the types of
donations that are eligible for a match. Most corporations are
leery of being affiliated with controversial causes (such as
organizations that promote homosexual rights or abortion
rights) and consequently may limit their matches to academic
institutions, social services, or environmental causes. In
addition, corporate matches are almost always limited to
donations that are made to registered 501(c)(3) organizations.
Your employer's human resources department should be able to
give you a copy of the company's written matching gifts
policy, detailing these and other restrictions.
The procedures for obtaining a match vary among companies.
Some employers have a form that you must fill out and present
with your check to the non-profit organization. Other
companies ask the employee to make the donation and then
provide a copy of their receipt, so that the company can then
mail the match directly to the non-profit organization. Again,
this should be specified in your employer's written matching
gifts policy.
Why do corporations have matching gifts programs? Some
corporate executives simply believe that funding worthy causes
is the right thing to do. Others cite the importance of
supporting their employees' interests and volunteer work.
Given the public's increasing interest in corporate social
responsibility, many companies benefit from the publicity that
they receive when the non-profit organizations publicly
recognize their donors (including complimentary tickets to
donor-recognition events). And some companies have a financial
motive, as the matching donations are tax-deductible
charitable gifts.
Non-profit organizations generally recognize their donors in
annual reports, on donor plaques, on websites, and at donor-
recognition events. When a non-profit organization receives a
corporate-matched gift, it usually recognizes the employee for
the amount of the original gift, and the corporation for the
amount of the match.
The holidays are a season of giving, and they say that it is
better to give than to receive. But it is even better to give
and then receive a match from your employer, knowing that
together you have been able to give so much more.

That's Outrageous!
Fortune Renewal Tactics
contributed by Richard A.
Albuquerque, NM
I had been curious about the focus and content of Fortune
magazine, so I started a one-year subscription. At the end of
the year, I felt that this magazine did not meet my needs. I
did not renew the subscription, tossing the renewal
statements. Then I got a "Demand for Delinquent Payment" from
their billing center. The letter suggests, nay demands, that I
immediately pay the "overdue balance"! Of course, there is a
statement that if there is an error I should contact them
immediately, but there is no telephone number or email
address. They just request payment in their envelope. Oh, of
course, the postage is on me too. Such bully type nerve,
demanding an overdue payment when there was no payment due.
Watch out for this tactic!

Cell Phone Sanity
by Tamara Wilhite
Cell phones don't have to be an expensive luxury
Since I work in the office, handle tech support emergencies on
my personal cell phone, and work from home on "sick kid days"
when my kids aren't well, having a cell phone is a necessity.
However, paying for it feels like a luxury. Here are a few of
tips to keep the costs within sanity:
- When I needed new batteries, the cost of a new battery
turned out to be nearly as much as a new phone. The dealer
suggested I either get a new phone ($100 after rebate) or pay
$80 for a new battery taken out of a recycled phone someone
had sold back to them. So I went to an online dealer and
bought two used phones of my older line model for $5 a piece.
The batteries are interchangeable with my phone, at a fraction
of the cost.
- Review your cell phone bill. Are you paying for more cell
phone messages than you're receiving? If so, downgrade that
option on your phone. Are you paying for text messaging you
aren't using? If so, get rid of it.
- Phone companies charge you to break your plan. However,
changing from 9 PM nights to 7 PM nights with your current
service provider is far different than changing providers.
Talk to the customer service representatives and explain that
you're not breaking your contract. Instead, you're upgrading.
For $5 a month more, I changed from 9 PM nights to 7 PM
nights, without fees for changing contracts.
- If your spouse wants a phone for emergencies, get a cell
phone without a plan. All cell phone 911 calls must be
received whether you pay a carrier or not.
Cell phones don't have to be an expensive luxury if handled
wisely.

My Story: Our Success Story
contributed by Denise
Making a huge financial turnaround
I thought I would share our "success" story. Not rags to
riches, but definitely a huge turn around in our lives. My
husband and I met in 1997 and married in 1998. We went out to
eat often and went on several "weekend trips" (some of which
were driving 1000 miles one way) to go to concerts and music
festivals. We bought as many CDs, LPs, and DVDs as we wanted.
(Did I mention we're big music fans?) One time, shortly after
I resigned from my job and we were down to one income, we flew
to Los Angeles strictly to see a concert.
We bought a ton of stuff on sale. We were saving money, of
course, because we were buying stuff on sale, but we were
spending a lot of money on our "bargains." Plus, we didn't use
everything that we bought.
We had a house with a mortgage, two car payments, college
student loans for both of us, and a lot of credit cards. All
told, we owed about $60,000 not including our mortgage.
$40,000 of that was on our maxed out credit cards.
My husband and I have never made a lot of money. I was the
"breadwinner" as a teacher, and as most people know, teachers
don't make much money.
We finally decided we needed to do something. We entered
consumer debt counseling and paid about $800 a month to the
credit card companies each month.
Whenever we got a windfall, we applied it to the debt.
We were definitely living month to month, but we only asked to
pay less than the regular amount a couple times, no matter how
hard it was for us to make the $800 payments.
I worked my regular job and took a second job at a hospital
working weekends. I even worked some overtime during the
summer to get more money to give to the credit card companies.
My husband worked overtime whenever it was available. He
sometimes worked seven days a week for weeks or months at a
time.
Luckily, we didn't have any children that required our time or
money, and were able to focus all our energies on paying down
the debt. If you're wondering if we gave up our music
addiction, no, we did not. We still went to concerts and music
festivals (even taking out-of-state trips. Only now, we were
paying with cash and debit cards. (One of the requirements for
the debt counseling was that we cancel all of our credit cards
and we did keep a debit card so we could use it for hotel and
airline reservations.) We used (and continue to use) places
like Priceline, Hotwire, and Orbitz for our travel needs so
that we spent as little as possible (and tried to stay with
family as much as possible).
"Big" vacations were trips to parents/in-laws. One family
lives in Prince Edward Island, which is perfect to visit in
the summer, and the other family lives in Florida, which is
great for a winter vacation. Flying to Florida in December
2001 was extremely inexpensive. We paid $160 for two people
round trip.
We actually paid off our credit cards almost a year before we
were scheduled (we were scheduled for five years). When we
made the final payment, I called my parents to share the
wonderful news, and my husband and I celebrated by going out
to eat at a nice, but inexpensive restaurant and paid with
cash!
We vowed we would never get into credit card debt again and we
have succeeded. My husband and I both were also contributing
to our 401k/403b plans during the whole ordeal. In addition to
paying off our credit cards, we started a fairly decent sized
retirement account.
Our next project is to pay off our mortgage early. We have 23
years left on it and are going to try to pay it off before
2010. No, we will pay it off before 2010.
Our cars are paid off and still get good gas mileage so we'll
be keeping them as long as possible. What helped us:
1. A sign printed on a computer with a motivational quote. We
still have it on our fridge. We chose "When you're going
through hell, keep going," which is a quote by Churchill.
2. We kept in mind that no matter how bad off we got, we were
the ones who made the choices that got us into that position.
3. We also kept in mind that there were always people worse
off than we were and we continued to contribute to charity.
4. We kept our most recent credit card statements posted on
our fridge so we could see our progress.
5. We made huge payments on the smallest balance when we had
windfalls.
6. We worked overtime and/or a second job.
7. We lived below our means and we still do this. We may be
able to afford something at $35, but I'd rather wait for it to
go on sale for $10.
8. I never took a credit card or debit card when I went
shopping. I also avoided shopping for fun.
9. We did the little things. We took our lunch to work with
us, drank water, ate vegetarian (which we do for reasons other
than saving money, but beans are naturally much less expensive
than meat), rolled down the windows in our cars, and turned up
the thermostat in the summer and down in the winter.
10. We also did all the slightly bigger things. We got rid of
cable TV, a land line phone, and home Internet. We watched
local networks, had two prepaid cell phones, and we used the
Internet at work (while on break) and at the local library for
free.
11. We will continue to use our cars as long as they are
running effectively and without damaging the environment. We
have 230,000 miles on a 1997 Cavalier that we have never had
repaired, but we have always taken care to have regular oil
changes, and changed tires and brakes as needed.
So, that's it. We got ourselves into debt, we got ourselves
out of bad debt, and we're working on being totally debt free.
If we can do it, anybody can.

Grinding Brake Rotors
Ask Bob: The Auto Answer Man
Why is the left side wearing faster?
Bob,
I have a 1998 VW Jetta. I have had the brake rotors and pads
replaced once. At that time, the right showed little to no
wear and the left was grinding metal to metal so I had both
sides replaced. Recently, I noticed grinding noise again. The
mechanic pulled the left, and sure enough, it was metal to
metal. When he pulled the right there was almost no wear on
the rotor. What would cause the uneven wear? He says that it's
a bad caliper. How do I know if he is telling me the truth
because until I questioned things he was just planning to
replace the rotors and pads? In fact, he was not even going to
take the right wheel off to check it before ordering parts.
Olga
Olga,
The front wheels should get even breaking pressure. More
likely than not, the right side caliper is sticking. If that
does not solve the trick, then it may point to a bad abs pump
(which is a lot more expensive and labor intensive).
Good Luck!
Drive Safely!

Ceiling fans can help keep a room comfortable. They all come
with seasonal reverse switches. You make the hot air rise in
the summer but send the warm air trapped at the ceiling
downward in the winter, keeping the occupied area warmer for
less money. If you don't think your ceilings are warmer than
the rest of the room, try installing a thermometer up at the
very top of the wall for a few days. A 70-degree room can have
an 80-degree ceiling.

Grandma Thought It Was Too Much
Our family draws names for the adults each year, and last
year, I drew my grandma's name. What in the world do you give
someone who has everything? How about a night off from cooking
each week for one month?
My grandma could not believe someone would give her a gift
like that. Because it was so generous, she almost said, "No, I
can't accept it." I went through my cookbooks and came up with
a variety of different meals, complete with salads, desserts,
etc. Some were meals similar to what she makes, and others
were completely new to her and grandpa.
I made up a very nice "menu" complete with all of her choices,
and then I made up another sheet in which she had to specify
her choices and when she'd like her meals.
When it came time for her "night out of the kitchen," I fixed
everything she'd picked out for the evening and brought it
down to her, hot from the stove or oven. The best part is that
she'd invite my son and I to stay for dinner so we all enjoyed
her Christmas present once a week! She's hoping I draw her
name or grandpa's name this year, so we can do it all over
again!
