Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
One of the responsibilities I have as the editor of the
Engineeringtalk website is to contribute to its visibility on the
internet, and to that end, last week I went to Webmasterworld, the
world's top conference for website owners and developers, in Las Vegas
(yes, it's a hard life, I know, and the Star Trek ride is better than
ever). Trust me, whatever you think you know about what's happening on
the internet, you know hardly anything. I met people running
newsletters from their bedrooms with circulations as big as national
newspapers, people who run hundreds of thousands of websites, and
above all, people from traditional bricks-and-mortar companies whose
business has been transformed by online sales and marketing.
Increasingly, however, the web is becoming synonymous with search. One
of the keynote speakers considers natural language search to be the
third stage in communicating with computer systems, after the command
line and the graphical user interface, and he has a point. The three
or four major search engines have an increasingly difficult task
serving up the results we expect from them, and as website owners we
need to ceaselessly promote and develop our sites.
One thing hasn't changed much recently. At the heart of the algorithms
which the search engines use to decide which sites to serve up as a
result of a query is still the number and quality of links to that
site. That's why I'd like to appeal to any of you who run websites
with an engineering or technical theme to link to Engineeringtalk.
Think of it as something you can do, without any cost to yourself, to
help a publication which itself comes to you free of charge.
I know many of you run some excellent information sites about
specialist technologies, often without any commercial considerations.
One line of text linking to us is all you need; perhaps if your
website is about a particular technology, you might like to link to
one of our relevant categories (see
http://www.engineeringtalk.com/indexes/browsecategories.html for a
list). The important thing is to have the subject in the link (e.g if
the link said "News about Electric Linear Actuators on
Engineeringtalk", it's important to have the "Electric Linear
Actuators" bit underlined as the link). It would be unethical to offer
you anything to do this, but you have our thanks in advance, and the
satisfaction that you're helping in a significant way to keep this
free resource strong.
I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do
take a look if you can. Alternatively, the full stories behind all
the summaries and headlines in this newsletter can be retrieved by
email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes
Chris Rand, Editor

[1] AIR PREPARATION SYSTEMS EXPAND IN CAPACITY
(Parker Hannifin, 22 Nov 2006)
The latest addition to Parker Hannifin's innovative Moduflex modular
air preparation system is the new Moduflex 80 range, ideal for use in
factory pneumatic ring-main installations. The products include
filters, lubricators and regulators, as well as accessories. A key
feature is the use of Parker's novel Cliplok fasteners, which allow
combinations of components to be assembled without the use of tools,
in less than half the time needed with conventional systems, and
without the need for extra items such as pipe connectors.

Seaward Electronic has published an updated version of its popular
free booklet providing details of all the practical electrical
engineering and safety issues associated with the safety of electrical
equipment and portable appliances in the workplace. The full colour,

[3] POLYMER BEARINGS ADOPT MINIATURE OUTLINES
(Igus (UK), 20 Nov 2006)
Igus has added two new mini polymer bearings to its Igubal range,
which are light and compact, simple to install and adapt to all
angular misalignments. High performance polymer bearings are being
used more and more in machine tools, handling equipment, laboratories
and automation equipment because they are dry running,
maintenance-free, manage without a seal even in heavily soiled
environments, and are corrosion resistant in liquids and chemicals.
The new KGLM Mini plain bearing has a highly resilient polymer bush,
the wall thickness of which has been reduced to half that of the
traditional KGLM bearing. There's also a new mini pedestal bearing for
high radial loads to suit 5, 6, 8 and 10mm shaft diameters.

[4] VSDS DRIVE DOWN HVAC COSTS
(Schneider Electric, 17 Nov 2006)
With dedicated functions for use with pumps and fans, and an
innovative design that minimises harmonic generation, Telemecanique's
new Altivar 21 range of variable speed drives should provide
substantial energy savings in HVAC applications. In almost all
applications, the cost of the new drive and its installation will
qualify under the government's Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme
for 100% tax relief in the first year. Altivar 21 drives are
available in three-phase versions with ratings from 0.75kW to 75kW,
and can be supplied as IP20 units for mounting within control panels,
or as IP54 models which require no additional enclosure.

Danaher Motion has launched two electric lifting cylinders. The
Thomson Pro 80, with its ball thread screw, is designed to withstand a
905kg maximum load, and the Pro 40 model, with trapezoidal spindle,
has a 340kg top load-bearing capacity. As well as greater load
capacities, the new models have more compact designs, enhanced energy
efficiency and comprehensive control options. They also feature

[6] HYDRAULIC FILTERS EASE DISPOSAL PROBLEMS
(Parker Hannifin - Filter Division, 21 Nov 2006)
Parker Hannifin 's latest E-Series filters are designed for use in a
wide range of hydraulic and oil lubrication systems and will enable
companies to enhance their environmental policies, as part of
ISO14001. Contaminated and spent oil and lubrication filters
traditionally have to be changed as complete units, including filter
media and the element sleeve or support core, or as spin-on cans,
which can account for a significant proportion of industrial waste by
weight and volume. The E-Series filters however are designed so that
only the filter media has to be replaced, with the element sleeve or
central support core being reusable. Perhaps as importantly, the
disposable elements can be crushed, shredded and baled or incinerated
using conventional techniques and without producing hazardous
residues.

[7] COATED TAPE REACTS TO LASER EXPOSURE
(DataLase, 20 Nov 2006)
DataLase has unveiled its Casemark Tape, a cost-effective label
replacement solution for outer case secondary packaging. Featuring
DataLase coated tape, this fully integrated system produces a colour
change in the tape from white to black on exposure to a low power,
DataLase approved CO2 laser. As the tape does not have any backing
paper or require any inks, ribbons or other costly consumables, the
technique is much simpler, cheaper and more environmentally friendly
than traditional print-and-apply labels. Additionally, the
"apply-and-print" technique enables information to be "printed" on the
tape after the tape has been applied to the case, as opposed to
traditional thermal labelling techniques.

(Analytical Technology, 20 Nov 2006)
New from Analytical Technology (ATi), the A15/76 turbidity monitor is
designed to meet the needs of both municipal drinking water systems
and industrial water treatment for reliable, low-range turbidity
measurement. By using an infrared light source and a 90 degree
scatter measurement, the innovative A15/76 "provides high sensitivity
