FASTING
For thousands of years, fasting has been a part of the lives of people from
many cultures, both for religious and health reasons. On the religious
side, people have fasted to exercise their discipline, while praying for a
specific issue, and to mourn. In fact for many years Christians were
required to fast during Lent before being allowed to join the church; I
think that might seriously cut down on church membership these days. On the
health side, people believe it can be beneficial to give our bodies a break
from the digestive process. Fasting, even for a day, can help dieters to
see that it isn't so bad to go without, as the stomach stays small and so
many people don't get as hungry as they think they will. If you aren't
ready for the whole nine yards, try a solid food fast and just drink milk &
juices during the day. The next time, try cutting back on the beverages,
but remember it is always important to drink plenty of water while fasting.
This will give you a fuller feeling & keep you from feeling dehydrated. If
you follow a diet, but give yourself a break one day a week, then the day
after the free day would probably be a good day to do it. There are lots of
books on fasting out there; do an Amazon search to see what interests you.
BUT BEFORE TRYING TO FAST ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR.
Some health conditions can be worsened by fasting, so CHECK WITH YOUR
PHYSICIAN BEFORE ANY FASTING ATTEMPTS ARE MADE. POST IT...on your fridge
(perhaps with the quote at the bottom of the issue on temptation?).

"FOR YOUNG WOMEN ONLY"
One of our favorite authors, Shaunti Feldhahn (and Lisa Rice), have come out
with another book that we would like to recommend to all young women out
there. Following in the footsteps of the Feldhahns' previous books, "For
Women Only" and "For Men Only," "For YOUNG Women Only" is written for
teenage girls to help them understand how that male teen mind works. While
there are always exceptions to every rule, the information came from
interviews with young men themselves. So the next time your daughter says,
"Why are guys like that?!?!?," it might be a good time to give her this book
so she can unravel the mystery. A great idea for Christmas. To read more
about it, or order, go to...

FARMS/ORCHARDS
Housing developments are creeping closer and closer to agricultural areas.
Many of these newcomers haven't really thought through certain
considerations of "country" living and being a good country neighbor. So
for all those frustrated farmers out there, I'm probably preaching to the
choir, but I'll say my piece to the new "country" neighbors. If you are
buying a house in an area like this, there may be smells (fertilizer, animal
waste, etc) and sounds (farm machinery, animals, etc) associated with the
area. You wouldn't move into a house next to a public pool & then complain
about the noise, would you? So be realistic and truly examine whether these
things might bother you. The country is not a flat Thomas Kinkade picture,
it has real smells and noises. Also, be respectful of the farmer's
property...property line and harvests. On undeveloped property, just
because it isn't developed doesn't mean you can treat it as a National Park.
Some people think it is ok just to hike through the area, have picnics,
drive on the private roads, or even go shooting/hunting. Would you want
someone cutting through or having a picnic in your yard, even if they left
it the same as they found it (and often visitors don't)? Not only is it a
privacy issue, but it can also be a liability issue for the property owner.
Along the same lines, if you had a garden in your yard, how would you feel
about someone coming over & just helping themselves to some of the harvest?
Some might say, "But they have so much, taking a little is no big deal."
Not true. First, the more people that help themselves, the more others will
see & follow suit. When I was a child we had orange groves on one side of
our neighborhood for many years. People were constantly cutting through the
groves, picking fruit to eat, or in some cases just to throw at each other.
This is their harvest, their livelihood, and in the eyes of the law it is
stealing. If you don't believe me, talk with farmers who have had these
people arrested & charged with trespassing or theft. If you'd like to have
a farm experience, there are plenty of farms that are open to the public,
just check your yellow pages. POST IT...in plain sight if you live near a
farm. And to all those farmers out there, who work so hard to keep so many
fed, thank you for all you endure to provide for us. God bless you!

FAST FOOD DANGER?
No, we're not talking about the food this time, but the possibility of
dangerous employees. A local TV station found that a certain chain of fast
food restaurants employed the most registered offenders in the region.
This, in spite of the fact that the chain said their policy was NOT to hire
registered offenders. This is probably not an isolated situation. The
reason for the offender registries is the high number of offenders who
return to the same crimes after serving their time. This kind of person
might be looking for jobs where they can have easier access to children,
places like fast food playgrounds, amusement parks, etc. So don't assume
your children are safe just because it is a family friendly location.

RECIPE: CHICKEN (Turkey?) POT PIE (from Lori J.)
Here's a great one for chicken or that leftover Thanksgiving turkey (when
the time comes).
Ingredients:
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup green pepper, chopped
1/2 cup margarine
1/3 cup flour
1 (13 ounce) can chicken broth
1 cup milk
1 (16 ounce) bag frozen California blend veggies
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 cups cooked chicken, chopped
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Cook onions and pepper in margarine in sauce
pan until tender. Add flour and cook to bubbling. Stir in milk and broth,
mix well. Add veggies (frozen or thawed) and heat to boil. Stir in cheeses
and cook until melted, stirring constantly. When melted, remove from heat
and pour into pastry crust.
Crust for Chicken Pot Pie
Ingredients:
2 2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon paprika
5-6 tablespoons cold water
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
Mix flour, salt and paprika. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Add water
until all flour is moistened. Separate pastry into 2 balls. Roll and line
a 2 quart casserole dish with 1 pastry crust. Add filling and use other
half to cover top. Prick with fork. Bake 30-45 minutes. Can be frozen for
2 months before baking. You can also use Pillsbury ready made pie crust if
you don't want to make the crust. POST IT...in your recipe box & shopping
list.

MISSING: NATIONAL PARK CAUTION
Every year many people are injured or killed, because they don't take proper
precautions when visiting our National or State Parks. Again, this is not
your backyard, and there are cliffs, wildlife, and no ready access to
emergency aid. Please be wise and read ALL the cautions that are provided
by the park personnel. Don't travel alone, let others know your itinerary.
Always take extra clothing, food & water, in case you become lost. Keep a
close eye on children and warn them to stick to the trails. Teach them to
"hug a tree" (stay put) if lost, and make noise. Take a picture of the
bottom of your children's sneakers, so they'll be easier to track if they
become lost. Or even better, go with an experienced guide/camper/hiker.
For many cautionary tales, go to...

Remember to type the whole link in, if it wraps to a second line. POST
IT...with your travel guides.

FINAL WORDS
JOKE
"I have to admit that I lie on my Weight Watchers' food list. I'll put down
that I had 3 eggs...but I won't put down that they were Cadbury Chocolate
Eggs." :-) --Caroline Rhea (1964- )(Comedienne, actress, writer, director,
hostess of "The Biggest Loser") from "Caroline Rhea: Rhea's Anatomy"
QUOTE
"Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. After all,
you find out the strength of the German army by fighting against it, not by
giving in. You find out the strength of a wind by trying to walk against it,
not by lying down. A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes
simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why
bad people, in a sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a
sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the
evil impulse inside of us until we try to fight it..."
