Ian Mayor, Editor, writes:
Energy consumption is a very important issue and it gets increasingly
vital as a problem to address. As the world begins to seriously
grapple with the now accepted urgency to address global warming and
environmental change, the packaging industry has a key role to play.
Alright, that might seem like a statement of the obvious and it is
widely accepted. But in the UK, the Stern Review that has just
reported on the economics of climate change on behalf of the
Government should refocus much of our industry's current efforts.
On one area, there has been a great deal of effort in to different
forms of packaging that can keep food fresher for longer but the new
angle created by the benefits of new packaging technology could have
the potential to completely change current thinking and food
transportation. It does seem possible that the over-reliance on air
freight and heavy lorries on our roads could begin to give way to
water-based distribution - the sea and inland waterways.
The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is now critical. Is it now
possible that those who lead the packaging industry's thinking, in the
UK at least, and those who most shape opinions, can redefine packaging
as a means of food preservation and transportation that can radically
re-shape how we do things?
I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful.
