Ian Clay, editor, writes:
Statistics published earlier this month by the Health and Safety
Commission (HSC) reveal that the number of working days lost in Great
Britain due to work-related injury and ill health fell from 40 million
in 2000/02 to 30 million working days in 2005/06. There were 212 fatal
injuries to workers in 2005/06, a decrease of 5% compared to 223 in
2004/05. 28 605 major injuries to employees were reported in 2005/06,
down nearly 7% on the previous year. There were 117 471 other injuries
to employees causing absence of over 3 days.
While the general trend shows that in Great Britain health and safety
is moving in the right direction the sheer scale of these numbers show
there is no room for complacency. The need for the right information
and the right equipment is still a major concern which is why I was so
pleased to see the launch of a new health and safety event in the UK
in 2007 (see item 1 below for full details).
A series of regional exhibitions and conferences that allows those
with a need for information to access a conference stream delivered by
IOSH as well as other expert companies is a welcome addition to the UK
health and safety landscape. Also, as the event is regional it means
that you do not even have to be off-site for a whole day, although
there seems to be more than enough going on should you be able to
spare the time.
I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds of
others on our website and more being added daily, so do take a look if
you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.
Best wishes

[1] NEW HEALTH AND SAFETY EVENT IN FEBRUARY 07
(Health and Safety 07, 09 Nov 2006)
On the 21st and 22nd February 2007, Sandown Park in Surrey will play
host to the first in a series of new regional exhibitions, Health and
Safety '07, sponsored by DuPont. The aim is to enable those
responsible for the health and safety of their workforce to access the
best products and services locally and more easily through the
exhibition, whilst keeping up to date with industry developments
through the tailor made seminar programme. Two seminar programmes run
concurrently across both days of the show: one in collaboration with
the London Metropolitan branch of IOSH, the other put together by the
show's title sponsor, DuPont, and the Event Partners: Aearo, Gore,
Ansell and Principal People.

[2] FREE GUIDE TO WORKPLACE ELECTRICAL SAFETY TESTING.
(Seaward Electronic, 06 Nov 2006)
Seaward Electronic has published an updated version of its popular
free booklet providing details of all the practical issues associated
with ensuring the safety of all types of electrical equipment and
portable appliances used in all industrial and engineering workplaces.
The full colour, 36 page Guide To Portable Appliance Testing should be
of interest to all those with responsibility for ensuring the safe
operation of electrical equipment in factories, workshops, engineering
and similar workplaces, as well as those involved in conducting tests
or providing portable appliance test services. The duties of
employers, manufacturers, importers, hirers and maintainers are each
considered in the booklet, with full reference to the legal
requirements to test and the implications of the Electricity At Work
Regulations (EAWR 1989).

[3] NEW VOC LEGISLATION FOR AUTOMOTIVE WIPES.
(Mykal Industries, 27 Oct 2006)
From January 1st 2007 all products used within the Automotive
Refinshing Market must be labelled with the details of their Volatile
Organic Compound (VOC) Content and must be below the maximum levels
set. Traditional solvents such as thinners, IPA and IPA blends used
for Preparatory and Pre-Cleaning operations will be above the legal
limit for VOC emissions and as such all companies will be under
pressure to change to alternative products. Low VOC Prepwipes and Prep
Cleaner liquid from Mykal are designed for the fast wipe down and
pre-cleaning of metal and plastic surfaces prior to Painting, Bonding
and Final Assembly processes without health risks to operators.

[5] WALKING ON AIR? A GUIDE TO CROSSING SKYLIGHTS AND ASBESTOS ROOFS
(Workplace Access and Safety, 07 Nov 2006)
Accessing a roof safely and in compliance with the law is rarely as
simple as strapping on a harness, particularly when the roof is made
from asbestos or has skylights. Height safety specialist Carl Sachs of
Workplace Access and Safety explains why, and the practical steps that
can be put in place to make the workplace safer and reduce the
liability of employers.

[6] BATTERY ACID SPILLKITS LAUNCHED
(Fosse Liquitrol, 09 Nov 2006)
Do you have a battery recharging area in your warehouse or factory
with several batteries stored? Can you afford injury to your
operatives from spilled battery acid? Are you taking reasonable
preventative measures? 2,970 cases of personal injury resulting from
spilled battery acid were reported in the year 2005, with heavy claims
against employers. Fosse Liquitrol has designed battery acid
spillkits which provide for the rapid neutralisation of the spilled
battery acid rendering it harmless, prior to its absorption by
absorbent pads and cushions. The neutralising agent has a colour
indication system showing visually when the acid is completely
neutralised and thus safe to handle.

[7] LOADING BAY SAFETY - STOP DRIVE-AWAYS
(Castell Safety International, 09 Nov 2006)
Castell has added a new component to its Salvo range of drive-away
prevention systems, Salvo Chock. The unit removes the risk of
accidental drive-aways occurring during loading operations by forcing
operatives to chock vehicles before loading can begin. Salvo Chock
introduces discipline into the chocking procedure by interlocking the
chock to the loading bay. If the chock is not correctly fitted, the
bay door cannot be opened.

[8] NEVER MEASURE TOOL VIBRATION AGAIN?
(Industrial Noise and Vibration Centre, 01 Nov 2006)
The new release of the HAV-Base Hand-Arm Vibration database renders
most vibration measurements unnecessary - in compliance with the
regulatory guidance recommending the use of reliable published field
data wherever possible. Replacing a vibration meter and the resources
required to organise and assess tools in workshops and muddy fields
with a few mouse clicks, it generates accurate risk assessment data at
a fraction of the cost of traditional measurements. The latest version
of HAV-Base not only provides access to the largest collection of
accurate field vibration data available, but also to a comprehensive
set of risk management and calculation tools that automate report
generation. The new Noise-Base module adds noise data to the HAV
facilities to provide an elegant and cost effective risk assessment
and management tool for mobile and hand-held plant under the new noise
regulations.

[9] TOLLEY'S PRACTICAL RISK ASSESSMENT HANDBOOK
(Elsevier, 25 Oct 2006)
Risk assessment has become the backbone of Health and Safety
management in the UK and elsewhere. Employers have a legal duty to
prove that risk assessments have been carried out and precautions have
been implemented as far as (reasonably) practicable. Mike Bateman
demystifies the risk assessment process and how it relates to UK
legislation. He covers both the general techniques and the assessment
of specific risks, such as hazardous substances (COSHH), noise, manual
handling, DSE workstations, PPE, fire, asbestos and work at height.
The book is designed to be user-friendly and tells the reader how to
go about risk assessment, not just what the legislation requires.
