Composer set mood on TV, film
LOS ANGELES -- Basil Poledouris, a composer whose sweeping score for the 1989 TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" won him an Emmy Award and who became known for the bold orchestral sounds he brought to the movies "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Hunt for Red October," has died. He was 61.

Irma Alberta Montgomery
A service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in Willamette National Cemetery for Irma Alberta Montgomery, who died Nov. 3 at age 92.

James Carl Tenney
A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, in Resurrection Lutheran Church in Portland for James Carl Tenney, who died Nov. 8 at age 93.

James Thomas Russell
A gathering will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3. 2006, in the Milwaukie home of the deceased, James Thomas Russell, who died Nov. 1 of an aneurysm at age 56.

Janet Faye Abbott
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in Oregon City Evangelical Church for Janet Faye Abbott, who died Nov. 9 at age 30.

Josephine Hodgson
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene for Josephine Hodgson, who died Nov. 11 of ovarian cancer at age 75.

Maker of 'Bottle and Throttle' and other films dies
Sid Davis, a prolific educational filmmaker of the 1950s and '60s whose cautionary movies -- from "The Dangerous Stranger" to "The Bottle and the Throttle" -- sought to terrify an entire generation of young people into straitlaced middle-class obedience, died on Oct. 16 at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 90.

Mark A. Weaver
Mark A. Weaver died Nov. 8, 2006, at age 87.

Mary Ellen Holzschuh
A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in St. Mark Lutheran Church in Portland for Mary Ellen Holzschuh, who died Nov. 5 at age 68.

Nancy Almerigi
Nancy Almerigi died Nov. 6, 2006, at age 62. Nancy Van Piew was born May 26, 1944, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She was a bartender for Kuzzin's Lounge and lived in Portland since 2002.

News photographer who tied Clinton to JFK dies
Arnie Sachs, a Washington news photographer who took a memorable image from 1963 of a young Bill Clinton shaking hands with President John F. Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden, died Friday at his daughter's home in Dunkirk, Md. Sachs, who had bone cancer, was 78.

Paul B. Wagar
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Beaverton for Paul B. Wagar, who died Nov. 8 of cancer at age 76.

Peggy Ann Henderson
Recitation of the rosary, followed by a funeral, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in St. James Catholic Church in McMinnville for Peggy Ann Henderson, who died Nov. 9 of cancer at age 48.

Robert Donald McGilvra
A gathering will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, in the Portland home of his former wife Margaret McGilvra, for Robert Donald "Mac" McGilvra, who died Oct. 22 of pancreatitis at age 71.

Stanley Lawrence Diemoz
A gathering will be at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, in the Claremount Golf Course clubhouse for Stanley Lawrence Diemoz, who died Nov. 9 of cardiac arrest at age 74.

Star right-hander Johnny Sain knew how to mix it up
Johnny Sain, who teamed with Warren Spahn to pitch Boston to the 1948 National League championship in a pennant race that inspired an enduring baseball rhyme, died Tuesday in Downers Grove, Ill. He was 89.

Suzanne Barr
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, in Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton for Suzanne Barr, who died Nov. 8 at age 57.

Wayne Kenneth Roberts
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in Good Shepherd Community Church for Wayne Kenneth Roberts, who died Nov. 8 of cancer at age 49.
