Composer set mood on TV, film
LOS ANGELES -- Basil Poledouris, a composer whose sweeping score for the 1989 TV miniseries "Lonesome Dove" won him an Emmy Award and who became known for the bold orchestral sounds he brought to the movies "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Hunt for Red October," has died. He was 61.

Maker of 'Bottle and Throttle' and other films dies
Sid Davis, a prolific educational filmmaker of the 1950s and '60s whose cautionary movies -- from "The Dangerous Stranger" to "The Bottle and the Throttle" -- sought to terrify an entire generation of young people into straitlaced middle-class obedience, died on Oct. 16 at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 90.

Arnie Sachs, a Washington news photographer who took a memorable image from 1963 of a young Bill Clinton shaking hands with President John F. Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden, died Friday at his daughter's home in Dunkirk, Md. Sachs, who had bone cancer, was 78.

Johnny Sain, who teamed with Warren Spahn to pitch Boston to the 1948 National League championship in a pennant race that inspired an enduring baseball rhyme, died Tuesday in Downers Grove, Ill. He was 89.
