Moon’s surface is alive and gassing Nov 10

The moon’s surface is far more active than previously thought; according to researchers in the US, who claim that gases released from deep beneath the surface continue to shape the lunar landscape. This appears to defy conventional wisdom that the surface of the moon has been unaffected by internal processes for the past billion years (Nature 444 184).

Spin measured without destruction Nov 10

The spin state of a single electron in a quantum dot has been measured for the first time without destroying the state. David Awschalom and colleagues at University of California, Santa Barbara, determined the spin by reflecting polarized laser light from a quantum dot. The development could lead to the exploitation of the quantum properties of single electrons in quantum computers (Sciencexpress 9 November 2006).
