Microsoft to Start Selling Vista at Retail Jan. 30
Microsoft's Windows Vista, the software giant's first major
upgrade of its operating system in five years, is complete
and will be available to retail customers Jan. 30, a senior

Windows Vista is front and center of a new product cycle at
the world's largest software maker that includes a new version
of its Office business software suite.

News: RFID Maker Licenses IBM's Clipped Tag Technology Paul Moskowitz, a Ph.D. researcher at IBM's Watson Research
Center, believes security is definitely an issue with
RFID-tagged goods. Along with his colleagues, Moskowitz
has invented what's referred to as Clipped Tag technology to
help solve some of those basic security issues. IBM,
commercializing Moskowitz's work, announced Nov. 8 that it
will license the Clipped Tag technology to RFID tag and label
manufacturer Marnlen RFiD--the first manufacturer to license
IBM's technology, which was announced earlier this summer.
Marnlen will began producing and marketing the technology
immediately.

News: HP, SAP Ink Deal to Better Optimize Apps on Hardware
What do "Shrek 2" and SAP have in common? A lot, according to
Hewlett-Packard. The infrastructure hardware company announced
that it will collaborate with SAP on research aimed at improving the
efficiency of HP systems running SAP software--or software
components, as the case may be. HP Labs developed technology
to help DreamWorks, the studio that created the "Shrek" movies,
scale its rendering capabilities by moving the necessary computing
resources off-site to HP Labs. Rendering for "Shrek 2"--the process
that converts animators' computer-generated wire models into finished
frames by adding details like color, light and texture--required a data
center with 500 HP servers connected to the DreamWorks studio.
