Jazzercise Honored with Volunteer of the Year Award

Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett was honored by the North County Philanthropy Council with a Volunteer of the Year Award at a November 2 ceremony in Escondido, Calif.  The award recognizes contributions of those who have "given countless hours of dedicated service to help those in need, enhance our quality of life and benefit our communities."  Jazzercise's efforts were nominated by New Village Arts Theatre, an award-winning theatre group in San Diego's North County.  During the past several years, Jazzercise has donated its corporate Studio Space to NVA as a home base for its auditions, rehearsals and productions. Recently, NVA secured its very own theatre in downtown Carlsbad and Jazzercise looks forward to supporting its growth in the future.  Missett says of NVA, it "brings the culture of great live theatre and acting to North County with class, style and panache - unafraid to tackle challenging productions that provoke thought and personal introspection.  NVA is an exciting, award-winning North County asset."  For more on NVA, visit www.newvillagearts.org

Technique Tips

Right Adduct Across with Left Shoulder Pushing Across

Execute this movement by contracting with your obliques on the right side. Lead with your oblique muscles, not your limbs. Visualize a diagonal line that runs from the front of your shoulder down to the opposite hip adductors. Draw the two ends of this line together to work what is called your anterior oblique system.

Seated with Legs Extended Out; Circle Weight out to the Right and Over to the Left Side

This movement begins by pushing the weight (both hands holding the weight) out to the right side with the torso leaning forward in the same direction. Next, circle the weight out and over to the left side with the torso leaning forward and following the weight. Core muscles should be engaged throughout as gravity acts differently on the body during the phases of the circle.

Prevent Colds with Exercise

Source: health24.com

You might not typically associate regular exercise with a reduced number of colds caught.  However, University of Carolina researchers found that people who exercise regularly are 23% less likely to catch colds than their counterparts who exercise less.  The study also showed that exercisers who caught colds got rid of their symptoms faster than those who do little exercise.  Health experts believe that exercise ignites the immune system for a few hours each day; this helps to ward off colds.  You can reap the benefits of exercise with even thirty minutes of brisk walking.
