Ortho Litigation
Nearly 400 women in the US have filed lawsuits against Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Co., the makers of Ortho Evra birth control patch, claiming the contraceptive caused serious illnesses and at least one death. The lawsuits claim Ortho-McNeil failed to properly investigate the product's safety and deceived the public about the severity of potential side effects, including strokes and severe blood clots. If you or a loved one has experienced a blood clot, heart attack, or stroke while taking Ortho Evra, please fill out this [FORM] to join a possible class action against this allegedly harmful drug.
Birth Control Linked to Breast Cancer
Young women who take oral contraceptives have a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk is greatest for women who use birth control pills before they have their first child. Researchers concluded that taking oral contraceptives before a first full-term pregnancy increases pre-menopausal breast cancer risk by 44%, compared with women who have never used oral contraceptives. The increase in risk was 52% among women who took the pill for four years or more before having their first child. [FOX NEWS]
Cot Deaths
Researchers from the Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) had flaws in their brainstem. Brain abnormalities prohibit babies from processing serotonin, which affect breathing and temperature control, and could increase a baby's risk of cot death. Brainstems from babies affected by SIDS contained more nerve cells that make and use serotonin, but there were fewer serotonin receptors than other infants, meaning they could not process the brain chemical as they should. Breastfed Health
Children who are breastfed for less than six months have an increased likelihood of delinquent, aggressive, and antisocial behaviors compared to those breastfed for longer periods. Babies who are fed breast milk for less than six months had a 52% increased risk of a mental health problem at 2 years of age, a 55% increased risk at age 6, and by age 8 the increased risk was 61%. Doctors from the University of Western Australia found breast milk played an important role in the rapid early brain development that occurs in the first year of life. [ABC NEWS]
Cooling Curry
According to recent research from the University of Arizona, the curry ingredient turmeric may have some potential in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis treatment. Turmeric is a major dietary source of curcumin and has been found to significantly inhibit joint inflammation and peri-articular joint destruction. Scientists are working on developing a turmeric extract to treat these and other inflammatory disorders, such as asthma, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease. [BBC NEWS]
Salmonella Outbreak
A salmonella outbreak potentially linked to produce has sickened at least 172 people in 18 states across the US. Salmonella typhimurium, the most common type of the bacteria, has been linked to this outbreak. Eleven people have been hospitalized and symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever and headache. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are currently investigating a source. [FORBES]
Sleep on Stress
When older adults go to bed feeling lonely, sad or overwhelmed, they wake up with elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood. A surge of cortisol may act as a protector as it actually cues the body that it is time to rev up to deal with loneliness and other negative experiences. A study found experience influences stress hormones and in turn stress hormones influence experience, and sleep does not wash away stress. [SCIENTIFIC AMERICA]
Sick with Divorce
According to a 10 year study by Iowa State University, divorce actually increases chronic stress and produces greater physical illness. An important factor linking divorce to later psychological distress was the experience of stressful life events and lack of support during tough times. Compared with women who stay married, divorced women reported 7% higher levels of psychological distress and 37% more physical illness. [SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER]
Accessing Asthma
Researchers at New York University attached air pollution monitors to schoolchildren's backpacks to measure the pollution the children were exposed to throughout the day. The study found that South Bronx students were twice as likely to attend a school near a highway and were exposed to high levels of air pollutants in their neighborhoods compared to children in other parts of the city. Airborne particles like dust, soot and smoke can lodge themselves deep in the lungs and are linked to respiratory problems, decreased lung function, nonfatal heart attacks, and aggravated asthma. Brazilian Berry
The word is spreading that the Brazilian acai berry is the ultimate antioxidant juice that can cure just about anything that ails you. Anheuser-Busch is on board and has recently launched a berry energy drink known as 180 Blue. Also, distributor Mona Vie is hosting berry-tasting parties across the US. Consumers of Mona Vie are making lots of claims, but most of them have yet been tested scientifically. [FRESH PLAZA] [MONA-VIE]
