001 continues to rack up major travel miles by returning from his multinational tour of Europe and the Far East, only to make the trek this week to Sin City to cover the SEMA Show. With over 39 billion dollars spent annually of aftermarket equipment he had to enlist 004 and 00B to assist in gathering the latest and in aftermarket technology. Knowing these guys I bet a few spy girl interviews were in order too, you never can have too many inside sources. • With over 39 billion dollars spent annually on aftermarket equipment, SEMA has always been a showcase for manufacturers to show their latest wares. This year certainly proved no different. The Ford Motors Boss 302 definitely made it's presence known, as did Volvo's C30 trio, and even a modern day rendition of a 30's roadster. VW was even on hand with an outrageous 400hp GTI and a reincarnation of the original Thunder Bunny.
• Outside SEMA we had a very busy week with various announcements of monthly manufacturer sales and a many hot topics.
• Toyota showed everyone it is dead serious about domination of the auto market in the United States. First up this week was the announcement that the new Tundra would come with an available 381 hp v8 to compete against the domestics. Toyota also announced two more planned manufacturing plants in the US to assist with increased demand.
• Who was first the chicken or the egg? Lexus announced this week the LS600h L will be the first production vehicle to market with LED technology for headlights. Lexus stalwarts heralded the technical innovation, while German fans cried foul. It seems the technology first debuted in 2005 at the Tokyo Auto Show in a German concept vehicle.
• Proving the Germans don't have the market cornered on complicated electronic wizardry that takes an engineering degree to decipher. Bill sent us a video showing how the Lexus 460 self park feature can take a really simple task, and complicate in way that only an engineer can truly understand.
