? Sorrell Looks East and West
NEW YORK What keeps Martin Sorrell awake at night? By his own account, "China and the Internet." That's what the WPP Group CEO revealed during his keynote address this morning to attendees at the Media Convergence Forum here. Sorrell's speech, titled "A Global Revolution," outlined what he considers the seven challenges facing multinational businesses against the backdrop of an ever-changing media landscape and the rise of China. The first challenge is the current shift in economic power from West to East, according to Sorrell, which doesn't necessarily suggest a decline of the West, he said, but "a balancing of the world economy." Overcapacity in the production of goods and services (e.g., the car industry) is pandemic in many businesses and further complicated by what Sorrell said was an "under" capacity of human capital. As an example, he cited the price slashing of cars to get rid of inventory--a form of "profitless prosperity" that needs to be properly addressed. The Web is a third challenge that Sorrell believes continues to siphon top-line talent from other industries. more ?

? Nielsen Fuses TV, Internet
NEW YORK Nielsen Media Research and Nielsen NetRatings have launched their National TV/Internet Fusion database, which merges information from television and Internet viewer/user panels into a single data set, allowing programmers and advertisers to maximize the relationship between TV and Web use. The new service will be offered through Nielsen's Anytime Anywhere Media Measurement initiative. The resource combines Nielsen's National People Meter sample of more than 30,000 respondents, with NetRatings' NetView sample, which electronically tracks the Internet use of about 29,000 panelists from homes and businesses. The fused database can provide age, sex, education, household income and region of the country, to provide a comprehensive picture of consumers' TV and online activities. The goal of the database will be to ultimately develop a single-sample TV/Internet panel. more ?

? Planworks Refines Exec Roles
NEW YORK GM Planworks, a unit of Publicis Groupe's Starcom MediaVest Group, has become the latest agency to appoint an executive to oversee buying across media platforms with the promotion of Mike Rosen to the new position of president of investment and activation. In a related move, the agency advanced Mary Carpenter to the new post of president, strategy and operations. In her new role, Carpenter will oversee planning for all GM divisions. Both executives report to Planworks chief executive Dennis Donlin. Several other agencies--including Omnicom's PHD, Interpublic Group's Initiative and Publicis Groupe's Starcom--have in recent months appointed executives to oversee buying across all media channels. The shops have taken this approach to foster media neutrality as they strive for more cost-efficient, integrated and targeted buying programs. Planworks added GM's $3 billion-plus buying account last year. more ?

? Nike to 'Usurp' ESPN Telecast
LOS ANGELES For the first time in the show's history, ESPN's SportsCenter will be "taken over" today, with all commercial pods featuring original content created for Nike by independent Wieden + Kennedy, according to the agency. The effort begins today with the sponsorship takeover orchestrated by Danny Sheniak, media director at the Portland, Ore.-based agency. All told, 10 minutes of mainly humorous material will air, introduced by Epoch Films' director Stacy Wall, who provides a tongue-in-cheek "director's commentary" throughout. The work centers on fictitious relatives of Cleveland Cavaliers star Lebron James. Spots are set in a backyard pool, on a street court and in various Cleveland locations. One segment shows the city as it would appear if used as the backdrop of a Hollywood-style urban drama. The overall campaign tagline is, "We are all witnesses." The effort promotes James' new signature shoe from Nike. more ?

? Wired Acquires Reddit
SAN FRANCISCO Wired Digital, parent company of the Wired.com technology portal, has acquired the Reddit social news service for an undisclosed sum. Boston-based Reddit was founded around the same time as Digg. Although Reddit has a loyal user base, it attracts significantly less traffic. Reddit's four employees will move to Wired's San Francisco office, but the site will remain to operate autonomously, the company said on its blog. "We're still going to be the guys reading your feedback e-mails and keeping Reddit chugging along," the company said. Similar to Digg, Reddit allows users to submit content and lets visitors vote for the most interesting story. Popular stories are then promoted to the front page. more ?

? Totes-Isotoner Hires Northlich
CHICAGO Totes-Isotoner has enlisted independent agency Northlich to handle its advertising, brand identity and public relations programs, the client confirmed. "Totes-Isotoner is looking forward to revitalizing our core brands while pursuing new market opportunities," said Michael Katz, svp of the company's U.S. wholesale division, in a statement. "We believe the best way to do that is through a strategic and integrated approach, and we were impressed with Northlich's track record for creating insightful brand strategies supported by creative integrated campaigns." The Cincinnati-based client is a leading marketer of umbrellas, gloves and slippers. Most of the company's past ad efforts have focused on driving holiday purchases. more ?
