Ian Mayor, Editor, writes:

Sustainable packaging is a wonderful concept and certainly one that I,
amongst many other people, would wholeheartedly support in principle.

Now, when I say in principle, that is not to imply I am one of those
with Luddite tendencies that happily agrees with this and that
proposition until it might effect me and my backyard, if you take my
point.

No, I am of the school that believes that sustainable packaging has to
be achieved, that there is probably no choice and that the industry
must do its bit in these troubled ecological times. However, it is not
as easy as 'just' maximising the use of renewable, recycled source
materials in the production of packaging. It also demands, as I
understand the official definition, that packaging is beneficial, safe
and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its lifecycle,
that it is sourced, manufactured, transported and recycled using
renewable energy.

And, of course, we have the giant retailers who shape and dictate how
so much develops for us as consumers, as they lead the charge with
their packaging materials reduction campaigns, which is in itself
highly laudable.

However, exactly how do packaging companies, with the pressure for
constant research and development and the provision of viable
packaging alternatives, make money when under such massive pressure?
Can all businesses along the supply chain makes a living, and still
attain a sustainable packaging goal?

Or will commercial reality, economics and practicality make the crying
need for sustainable packaging achievement yet another fashionable
trend that eventually withers?
