Spinach Strain Samples
The California Department of Health Services has found six new samples of toxic E. coli bacteria matching the strain in tainted spinach that killed three Americans and sickened over two hundred. Investigators have linked the fatal bacteria strain to neighboring cattle ranches and wild pigs that may have spread it by trampling fences surrounding spinach fields. Most cases of E. coli are associated with undercooked, contaminated ground beef, but contaminated manure can get into irrigation water or be used in fertilizer and then sprayed onto fresh produce. Autistic Television
Toddlers who watch too much television may suffer from autism, a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. Experts warn watching television may actually cause autism and suggest children under the age of two should be barred from sitting in front of the screen altogether. Parents should follow the American Academy of Pediatrician's recommendations and limit older children's viewing to one or two hours a day. [DAILY MAIL]
Calling All Sperm
A new study reveals a link between poor sperm count and the number of hours a day that a man uses his mobile phone. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio found men who used their phones for more than four hours a day had the lowest average sperm counts. There is no proof of cause and effect, and sedentary lifestyles may play a role in decreasing fertility, but more research is warranted. [BBC NEWS]
Depressed Sperm
Researchers from the Cornell Medical Centre in New York discovered men taking antidepressant drugs may become infertile. Men in the study were given Prozac or Seroxat and were followed for two years. The blockbuster antidepressants revealed a possible adverse effect on both the concentration and swimming ability of sperm. All men in the study showed a decreased sperm count while on the medication and some sperm counts dropped to almost zero. The previously unknown effect could have a significant effect on couples trying to start families. [TIMES ONLINE]
Clicking Addiction
Internet addiction is a new controversial topic that has significantly disrupted the lives of millions of people. Up to one in eight American adults may have at least one sign of problematic Internet use. People who have an online addiction have relationships that suffer due to their usage, they conceal nonessential Internet use, and they feel preoccupied by the Internet when offline. [CBS NEWS]
Excessive Painkillers
Millions of people taking common painkillers may be increasing their risk of heart attack or stroke. Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen may be associated with a small risk of arterial thrombotic events, such as heart attack or stroke. The Commission on Human Medicines suggests doctors should prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest time necessary, and have requested that manufacturers update their information on the side-effects to include vascular events. Cold Memories
Mayo Clinic researchers report viruses that cause a range of illness from the common cold to meningitis may be able to infect the brain and lead to memory loss later in life. Memory loss could accumulate over a lifetime and eventually result in clinical cognitive memory deficits. Picornavirus infections over time can lead to an increased likelihood of detectable cognitive impairments as the individual ages. [FORBES]
Aging Mothers
Doctors from the University of Southern California note mothers in their 50s did not have increased health risks or higher stress levels than younger mothers. Maternal age has been regarded as a sufficient reason to refuse IVF treatment, but this research will significantly strengthen the case against upper age limits for fertility treatment. Early Onset Puberty
Children now reach puberty earlier than ever and should be offered advice on adult issues much sooner. The age of onset puberty now appears three years earlier than a century ago. Researchers believe stress associated with parental separation and absentee fathers can fast track puberty. The gap between physical puberty and social puberty needs to be recognized to reduce damaging behavior, such as unprotected sex, substance abuse, self harm, violence and bullying. [ALL HEADLINE NEWS]
Wisdom and Weight
A study of college weight gain reveals that the 'Freshman 15' may be exaggerated, but students do put on weight during their school years. Both males and females gained an average of 7.8 pounds in the first semester, more than a third of the students gained 10 pounds, and nearly 20% gained 15 pounds or more. Both genders continued to gain weight into their sophomore year which may have negative long term effects. [REUTERS]
Smoking in Cars
New Zealand medical researchers are calling for new laws to ban smoking in vehicles where children are passengers. Evidence proves second-hand smoke causes respiratory illnesses in children whose lungs are still developing. Particulate, or tiny airborne particles that can enter the lungs, can be trapped within a car and have been associated with negative health effects in air pollution studies. [INDEPENDENT ONLINE]
