Chris Rand, Editor, writes:
Thanks for the examples of manufacturers getting involved in the
online buzz about themselves by setting up the facility for people
inside and outside the organisation to discuss their technology,
rather than waiting for it to happen anyway, but outside of their
control. If anyone thinks that ignoring online discussions will make
them go away, I only have to refer you to the industrial automation
weblogs at jimpinto.com, where the activities of manufacturers such as
ABB, Emerson, Schneider, Siemens etc have been regularly scrutinised
by employees and customers, independently, for several years.
From the suggestions, I thought I'd highlight examples of
manufacturers' weblogs at a large and a smaller company. Ford's "Bold
Moves" has been set up to showcase some online video documentaries,
but also contains a degree of interactivity, and allows anyone to chip
in. Naturally, the contributions which see the light of day will be
highly selective, but that's my point: by setting this site up, Ford
has created a focus (sorry) for people who want to comment on the
company which is under its control. As a customer, you may not think
this is a good thing; but I applaud them for doing it, from a business
point of view.
At the other extreme (and I'm sure they won't mind me describing them
as such), the good folks at electronics manufacturing supplies
specialist Intertronics have set up a useful blog which is exactly the
sort of simple but useful thing which will keep its customers coming
back. Why don't more suppliers do this?
Finally though, I must thank the reader who complains that his
company's IT system manages to prevent access to blogs because they're
considered to be some sort of undesirable internet chat system. I
sympathise. Memo to middle management; if you treat your employees
like children, my friends, don't expect them to act like adults...

[1] PACKAGE CUTS ENTRY COST OF THERMAL IMAGING
(Flir Systems, 24 Oct 2006)
Flir Systems says the introduction of its InfraCAM radiometric
infra-red camera earlier this year "has allowed thermal imaging to
become a toolbox technology", with the low cost price bringing this
highly flexible method within the scope of any professional engineer.
Now the company is offering a complete starter kit containing the
InfraCAM itself, a carrying pouch and an extra battery that extends
the potential inspection time of the InfraCAM to more than 14 hours.
Completing the kit is a car charger and a two-bay battery charger that
allows both batteries to be charged overnight or one to be recharged
while the other is in use.

[2] MACHINE VISION SOFTWARE NEEDS NO PROGRAMMING
(National Instruments, 20 Oct 2006)
NI Vision Builder for Automated Inspection Version 3.0 is the latest
upgrade to National Instruments' interactive software for configuring,
benchmarking and deploying complete machine vision applications
without programming. This version introduces a new "state-machine
process model" enabling users to customise the execution flow of their
inspections from component alignment to part inspection and
verification. Now users can graphically customise the flow of their
applications with conditional branches or iterative loops, allowing a
single inspection to dynamically adjust with each new image.

[3] LINEAR MOTORS ARE FREE FROM COGGING
(Anorad UK, 23 Oct 2006)
Available in versions which can generate peak forces up to 716N, the
latest LEB linear motors from Anorad feature ironless construction
which ensures complete freedom from cogging and magnetic attraction.
Suitable for mounting from three sides, these versatile units also
feature integral cooling, allowing them to be used in high duty cycle
applications. LEB linear motors have negligible external magnetic
flux and are capable of precise and reliable operation over an
exceptionally wide speed range, from around 1um/s to 10m/s.

[4] HYDRAULIC HOSES OFFER GLOBAL UNIFORMITY
(Parker Hannifin, 23 Oct 2006)
Parker Hannifin has introduced the first of its new range of No-Skive
hoses, which have been developed to enable both machine manufacturers
and end users to simplify hose specification and replacement anywhere
around the globe. The new high performance 302 and 422 Worldwide hoses
comply with the ISO1436 1SN and 2SN standards, respectively, for wire
braided reinforced hydraulic hoses, and are compatible with a wide
variety of fluid media, enabling them to be used in industrial,
process, construction, offshore and on- and off-road applications.

[5] AUTOMATION SOFTWARE MAKES THE MOST OF PLCS
(Schneider Electric, 23 Oct 2006)
With a clean modern user interface and intuitive operation that
eliminates the need for training, the new TwidoSuite software package
from Telemecanique should make it easier to develop automation
programs for compact PLCs in its Twido range. The company says it is
the first PLC programming package which is organised to work on a
step-by-step basis, with each step corresponding to a key project
stage. There are, for example, steps dealing with project definition
and hardware configuration, as well as steps for program development,
debugging and real-time monitoring.

[6] COMPACT PLC SCALES UP TO LARGER CHALLENGES
(Vipa UK, 24 Oct 2006)
With programming options for Step7 and Step5, an extensive range of
expansion modules, and with a wide choice of master/slave fieldbus
options, the compact Vipa System 200V PLC control system is claimed to
be a "well matched, scaleable solution for small to medium sized,
centralised or decentralised automation applications". The 35mm DIN
rail mounted System 200V includes an expandable backp*** bus
connector system and has a module height of only 76mm with nominal
module widths of 25 and 50mm - its compact size allows use in space
restricted applications and convenient cage-clamp (spring-clip)
terminations ensure quick installation.

[7] CATALOGUE IS BIBLE OF BEARINGS EXPERTISE
(Schaeffler (UK), 20 Oct 2006)
Schaeffler UK has launched a new 1500-page rolling bearing catalogue,
which not only includes more than 40,000 INA and FAG products, but
also provides design engineers with plenty of technical knowledge and
bearings expertise. More than 140 pages are devoted to the technical
principles of rolling bearings, with information on fatigue theory;
dynamic and static load carrying capacities of bearings; variable
loads and speeds; life ratings; rigidity and deflection; friction
values; limiting speeds and thermally safe operating speeds;
lubrication principles; design of bearing arrangements; and
information on fitting and dismantling.

[8] SUBMERSIBLE LEVEL TRANSMITTER ADDS ADJUSTMENT
(Roxspur Measurement and Control, 24 Oct 2006)
The Sensit submersible level/depth transmitter from Roxspur
Measurement and Control is used for monitoring boreholes, reservoirs
or for groundwater level measurement. A new version, the Sensit
P6420, is now available with customer adjustable full scale span,
enabling each unit to be configured for most normal water level
monitoring applications. This new feature enables reduced
stock-holding and improved interchangeability of units between
applications, as the 5:1 range turndown capability allows the P6420 to
be reconfigured by the user in the store or on site, to suit each
specific application.

[9] TESTERS ARE ADAPTED TO NONSTANDARD APPLICATIONS
(Lloyd Instruments, 24 Oct 2006)
Lloyd Instruments' "Customer Specials" department has recently
produced special versions of its 50kN LR50KPlus and 10kN LR10KPlus
twin column universal testing machines, to meet a customer's exacting
application requirements for a wider distance between the columns, and
a shortened version to fit into a particularly small laboratory space.
Despite having a product range which encompasses 12 single or twin
column materials testing machines offering testing and force
measurements from 1 to 300kN, Lloyd instruments says it is always
willing to discuss more unusual requirements.
