CHEP's Gen 2 Container Tracking System
Since the spring of 2004, CHEP has been offering its clients PLUS ID, a
service that includes RFID-enabled CHEP pallets; support applications to
collect, store and process data; and upgrades to ensure compliance with
emerging EPC standards. When the service first became available, the
company was using Gen 1 EPC Class 0 read-only tags (see Pallet Tracking Goes High Tech).
Now CHEP has announced the launch of a PLUS ID program using tags made with Impinj's Monaco/64
Gen 2 chip. This new offering provides an extra 64 bits of
user-programmable memory for clients to store data. The tags are being
applied to reusable containers used to ship liquid raw materials, food
ingredients and bulk quantities of manufactured products.
In a pilot project expected to start next month, Procter & Gamble and Avon
will track tagged containers in Brazil. The two manufacturers haven't yet
revealed the specific type of data to be recorded on the 64 bits of user
memory that will available on the Impinj tag. When the time comes, it will
be interesting to see how pallet-able this feature proves to be.
