Lettuce Water
Salinas Valley based Nunes Co. has voluntarily recalled some of its lettuce crop after finding E. coli in a sample of irrigation water. Although no signs of contamination were found on lettuce itself, tests found the potentially deadly bacteria in water from a reservoir used for irrigating the crop. Foxy brand green leaf lettuce went to retailers in California and six other states as well as to distributors that may have passed it along to restaurants. [SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE]

Spinach Source
Spinach borne E. coli that sickened more than 200 people and killed several others has the same DNA signature as that found in fecal matter on a ranch growing both greens and beef cattle. Deputy director of prevention services with the California Department of Health Services notes a laboratory found E. coli in three samples of cattle feces taken from a Californian ranch; officials have never made such a definitive connection to a contamination source in previous investigations in California's Salinas Valley. If you or a loved one has experienced symptoms of E. coli after eating Spinach, please fill out this [FORM] to join a possible class action against this allegedly tainted food.

Decaf or not too Decaf
A study released by researchers at the University of Florida found most decaffeinated coffee drinks contain at least a small amount of caffeine. The results could have implications for people told to avoid caffeine because of certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, kidney disease or anxiety disorders. A 16-ounce serving of caffeinated coffee contains an average of 160 milligrams of caffeine, while decaffeinated coffee has an average of 12 milligrams. The amount of caffeine in decaf can still result in addiction, especially if the customer is consuming multiple servings. [FOX NEWS]

Sprouting Prevention
British scientists have discovered a chemical in Brussels sprouts and cabbage that appears to kill off breast cancer cells when combined with chemotherapy drugs. The green vegetables contain a naturally occurring compound called indole-3-carbinol. The compound appeared to alter the molecules in three of the cell types, making them more vulnerable to anticancer drugs and therefore beneficial to patients. [DAILY MAIL]

Way of the Walnut
A high fat meal temporarily stuns your arteries by stiffening them and rendering them less able to expand in response to exercise. Over time, this repeated damage contributes to hardening of the arteries. New research from Spain suggests eating a handful of walnuts can protect your arteries from the shock of a high fat meal. Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acid and can reduce inflammation and boost elasticity to helps blood flow. [WEB MD]

Farming Breast Cancer
Canadian researchers have traced a link between breast cancer and working on farms. The study shows that women who have lived on or worked on a farm at any time in their life, run three times the risk of contracting breast cancer than women who never have worked on a farm. Exposure to pesticides, which are able to mimic or block the normal functioning of estrogen and other hormones, may be responsible for the increased incidence in these women. [GLOBE AND MAIL]

Autoimmune Effects
Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition marked by reddish lesions that can become covered with silvery scales and is triggered by a depressed immune system. The disorder affects up to 3% of the US population and approximately 150,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. The underlying biology of these disorders is intimately associated with that which leads to clogged arteries and heart attacks. [CHICAGO SUN TIMES]

Daily Weight
A new study shows that stepping on a scale every day and adjusting eating and exercise habits accordingly can go a long way in helping dieters maintain a weight loss. Typically dieters achieve their maximum weight loss at six months, hold their own for up to 12 months, and then start to regain weight. Reviewing ones weight on a daily basis aids dieters in maintaining their weight after they have already lost excess pounds. [FORBES]
