This Weekend's ARTS TIX 1/2 Price Ticket Sales
All that Jazz
The Chamber Music Ensemble Camarada
at Neurosciences Institute (Torrey Pines)
Camarada opens their season with a visit to the borderland between Classical and Jazz. Mike Mower's "Sonata Latino" translates the Latin dance forms (tango, salsa, rumba, etc) into a pure jazz idiom. In Paul Hindemith's simple,
melodious sonata, the bassoon and piano jazz it up. Maurice Ravel's sonata for piano and violin pays tribute to the blues in a piece of music that remains unmistakably French. Heitor Villa-Lobos brings his Brazilian sensibility to the
music of Bach, whose harmonics make the flute and bassoon duo sound surprisingly full. Eric Satie's hauntingly simple "Gymnopedie No. 1" clears our musical palate for the final composition: Claude Bolling's "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano
Trio" (arranged for flute, violin, bassoon, and piano), the immensely popular crossover collaboration with Jean-Pierre Rampal.
