Patch Update
The Food and Drug Administration recently updated the label of the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch to include a warning about an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, blood clots in the veins or pulmonary track. The patch exposes women to 60% more estrogen than does the typical birth control pill; estrogen and progesterone promote blood coagulation, which can lead to blood clots. The patch sends estrogen directly to the bloodstream and direct diffusion may be linked to the formation of blood clots, which may lead to serious harm or even death. [THE CORNELL DAILY SUN]

Dead Jaw
Merck's Fosamax is now facing growing concerns about side effects including osteonecrosis of the jaw. Dead Jaw is a rare irreversible condition in which bone tissue dies and fails to regenerate. Fosamax is prescribed over 20 million times a year and so far 2,400 patients who have taken the injected form of bisphosphonate had suffered bone damage to their jaws. [PHARMALIVE]

Premature Figures
A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported premature birth is now considered the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States. Approximately 34% of all infant deaths were related to preterm birth or birth before 37 weeks of gestation. The National Center for Health Statistics previously reported only 17% of infant deaths were directly caused by low birth weight, with the leading cause listed as birth defects. The figure doubled because other causes of infant death, such as respiratory distress from underdeveloped lungs, should have been ascribed to premature birth. [REUTERS]

Injecting Sight
Genentech Inc.'s Lucentis seems to be an effective treatment for neovascular age related macular degeneration. Large randomized controlled trials found that over two years patients receiving injections of Lucentis gained more than one line of visual acuity on a standard eye chart. The down side is that bacterial infection occurred inside the eye in one of every 2,000 injections and the wholesale price of just one treatment is $1,950. [MSNBC]

Aspiring Aspirin
New findings suggest aspirin has an anti-cancer effect by restricting the blood supply to a developing tumor and blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. Large doses of aspirin caused death of the blood vessel cells; understanding how the drug works may lead to innovative therapies. [WEB MD]

Prempro Penalty
A 66-year-old woman who took Prempro for six years developed breast cancer. As a result of the cancer, she underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She filed a lawsuit against Wyeth claiming it was negligent in the testing, manufacture and marketing of its hormone replacement therapy drug Prempro. A jury awarded her $1 million and her husband $500,000 in compensatory damages after finding that Wyeth's Prempro was a cause of her breast cancer. [LOS ANGELES TIMES]

Tricks of Trasylol
Pharmaceutical giant Bayer mistakenly failed to inform US regulators about a study on the risks of heart surgery drug Trasylol before an advisory panel met and ruled the side effects were acceptable. An analysis of records from 67,000 hospital patients suggests Trasylol might increase the risk of kidney damage, congestive heart failure, strokes and death. [YAHOO]

Compulsive Shopping
A new study by Stanford University Medical Center researchers found men are just as likely as women to suffer from compulsive shopping. Results from a phone survey revealed 6% of women and 5.8% of men have compulsive buying disorder. Compulsive shopping usually begins in a person's early 20s and is associated with lower incomes. The urge to shop becomes constant and overwhelming, but to qualify as a disorder, the behavior has to be associated with marked distress and interfere with functioning. [FORBES]

Roid Rage
Using steroids to build bulging muscles can also trigger catastrophic loss of brain cells. Steroids are known to raise levels of the male sex hormone testosterone and their effect might explain why some users become aggressive and suicidal, a condition known as hyperexcitability. Roid rage may be evidence of impaired brain function as high levels of testosterone triggers programmed cell death. [TIMES ONLINE]

Sunday Blues
After one US state lifted a Sunday ban on alcohol sales in 1995, there was a 29% increase in traffic crashes and a 42% increase in crash fatalities on Sundays. Only 15 states still ban the sale of packaged alcohol on Sundays, but are considering repeal in response to both pressures from the alcohol industry and the need to raise state tax revenues.
