Ian Mayor, Editor, writes:

Is your company thinking of going green? Is it already doing so?

If so, no doubt you and your colleagues are motivated by the genuine
desire to ease the strain on our ailing global climate. It might also
be true that you are also mindful of the commercial edge your firm's
credentials will benefit from by being seen to be 'clean' by customers
seeking environmentally responsible suppliers with whom to deal.

But have you stopped to think how being a good citizen in that way
will also strengthen your hand in the recruitment stakes?

Perhaps you should.

I am a father of two young people who have grown up in an age where
our environment is as topical a conversational piece as, well, the
weather. Sorting our domestic rubbish - including a vast amount of
packaging - in to recycling bins for our local council to collect
every fortnight is household routine and, as must be happening in
countless families, young people take those attitudes in to the
educational establishments. Soon they will enter the world of work
with the expectation that a potential employer will conform to the
budding recruit's environmental morals.

The packaging industry has been tackling environmental issues in their
broadest sense for many years now, as well as the workplace
environmental problems of handling substances and materials that raise
health and safety concerns. Great strides have been made but with
packaging in particular, from the consumer's perspective, much more
needs to be done.

But as packaging has faced up to eradicating harmful substances and to
re-aligning what it produces to respond to the problems we face, it
might struggle when it least needs to in attracting bright young
people because it fails to convince them that it is as green as it
could be. For young people who might see packaging as 'cool', please
let us avoid them getting hot under the collar because we fail the
environmental attitudes test. Don't forget, those young people are
also the sort of consumers who might be getting jaded by the fact that
packaging can be very environmentally unfriendly.

Now, that would be a volatile issue.

I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful.

In addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there
are hundreds more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so
do take a look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make
the site or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes
