Moving Jaguar Parts to the Fast ***
Unipart, which manages Jaguar Car's after-market parts
supply chain, thinks it may have found a way to rev up its process
for shipping the parts from the United Kingdom to the United States.
For the next three months, the logistics provider will enlist the
aid of Savi Network to monitor the security status and location
of cargo containers. At two of its U.K. distribution centers, the
company is sealing its cargo containers with Savi Technology's Savi
Tag ST-676 ISO Container Security Tag, an active 433 MHz RFID tag
that clamps onto the door.
The Savi Tag ST-676 is linked to sensors inside the containers to
monitor temperature, shock, light and humidity. If a tag detects
any changes in these parameters, it can send an alert to a handheld
or fixed-position RFID interrogator when the container arrives at
a port or warehouse. The goal is to speed up the transatlantic
shipping process by one day, according to Susan Evans, Savi Networks'
director of business development for the European and African regions.
Three months from now, Jaguar and Unipart will examine the results
of this trial and decide if Savi's active tag network really can fuel
such change. If so, other companies may want to come along for the ride.
