Questioning the Role of BIM in Architectural Education: A Counter-Viewpoint

by

Paul Seletsky,
Digital Design Director (New York office), Skidmore Owings and Merrill

Article Summary

In this Viewpoint article, Paul Seletsky counters some of the points made by Prof. Renée Cheng in her Viewpoint article published last month, questioning the role of BIM in architectural education. He argues that by looking at BIM simply as a newer type of representational CAD tool or model-making skill, we are overlooking its potential as enabling a new type of design process, one whose introduction into the realm of architectural pedagogy could provide a much-needed stimulus for the modernization of architectural education.
