This week saw a surprise announcement from Microsoft. Starting this winter, Xbox 360 game development is going to get an awful lot easier. Equipped with just a Windows XP
computer and an Xbox 360, XNA Game Studio Express will let you write your own
games for either platform, all for a yearly subscription fee of $99. While some of the details of Microsoft's planned system remain
unclear -- like who will own the games users create and how they'll be distributed -- it's a fantastic proposition for wannabe designers looking to get their feet wet in console development without taking out second mortgages.
