>>Foreign Newspapers To Be Printed in China
>>NewspaperDirect Inc., a leader in digital print-on-demand newspaper distribution, announced that it has signed an agreement with Beijing Founder Easiprint Co. Ltd. (Founder), a part of the $3 billion revenue Founder Group, which will enable foreign newspapers to be printed in the People's Republic of China for the first time. The agreement provides Founder with distribution and printing rights throughout China for all NewspaperDirect's hundreds of print-on-demand newspaper titles. Through this agreement, Founder Easiprint's rapidly growing chain of over 200 franchised print shops in China will be authorized to print any of the titles published by NewspaperDirect's publishing partners.

>>FedEx Kinko's Launches Smaller Stores
>>FedEx Kinko's, an operating company of FedEx Corp., introduced a new store format designed for superior customer service and convenience. The company expects to open 200 of the new centers across the United States by June 2007. The centers, which are approximately one-third the size of a traditional center, feature enhanced pack-and-ship stations and twice the number of office products. In addition to the new features, they also will offer the same services as a traditional FedEx Kinko's, including full-service and self-service copy and computer rental services.

>>GPO Digital Information Management System
>>The U.S. Government Printing Office has selected Harris Corp. to help develop a world-class Future Digital System. Harris, in collaboration with GPO, will work to ensure that the best technology available is used in the development of the system, which will also support all content within the scope of the Federal Depository Library Program and its more than 1,250 libraries around the country. Content will be entered into the system, authenticated and catalogued according to GPO selected metadata and standards. The variety of content will range from text and associated graphics to video, audio and other forms of content that emerge. This wealth of information will be available for Web searching, Internet viewing, downloading and printing, and as document masters for conventional printing, on-demand printing and other dissemination methods.

>>Postal Service Names New CFO
>>Harold Glen Walker, a certified public accountant with more than 30 years of domestic and international financial experience, has been named chief financial officer and executive vice president for the U.S. Postal Service. In his new position with the Postal Service, Walker is responsible for the organization's finance, treasury, information technology and supply management functions. He will serve as a member of the executive committee, reporting to the Postmaster General and will also serve as chairman of the corporate capital investment committee.

>>QuarkXPress 7 Universal App for Mac OS X
>>Quark Inc. announced the immediate availability of QuarkXPress 7 as a Universal application for Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger." The QuarkXPress 7.01 update, which is available at no additional cost for Mac users of QuarkXPress 7.0, was built to run at peak performance on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs. QuarkXPress said it is the first major design and publishing tool to be released as a Universal application, and its new graphics engine, XDraw, leverages the power of Quartz 2D to achieve the highest-quality rendering of text and graphics.

>>Solimar Partners with Xerox
>>Solimar Systems Inc. and Xerox Corp. announced a partnership that will couple Xerox consulting and managed services with Solimar's enterprise output management software to help organizations improve the management and delivery of transactional document communications. Through the partnership, Xerox Global Services will resell and deploy Solimar software, allowing clients from a wide range of industries, including financial services, insurance, healthcare, education, government, manufacturing and utilities, to enhance digital document output, production and distribution of customer communications, such as statements, bills, invoices, policies, quotes, proposals, enrollment kits, letters, manuals and general correspondence.

>>Monotype Imaging Acquires Linotype
>>Monotype Imaging Inc., a global leader in font and imaging technologies, has acquired Linotype GmbH, a subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and home of the renowned Linotype Library. The collection includes some of the most popular and time-honored designs, such as the Helvetica, Frutiger and Optima typefaces. Linotype and its employees will remain based in Bad Homburg, Germany, and will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Monotype Imaging. The combination of Linotype's extensive, high-quality typeface library and Monotype Imaging's font technology offerings and global distribution strengths will provide customers a greater range of typographic solutions for use in printers, display devices and the graphic arts professional market, the company said.

>>Artwork Systems Automation Seminars
>>Artwork Systems Inc., a world leader in professional prepress software, announced that it is hosting free workflow automation seminars in 20 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada in August. The educational, interactive program will present the latest technologies and feature a real-world discussion format focused on how to better serve customers and streamline business processes. >>PTS Adds More Font Management Tutorials
>>Prepress Training Solution (PTS), the premier online training provider to the graphic arts industry, announced comprehensive training for Insider Software's newest version of its popular font management software, FontAgent Pro 3.2. This new addition to the Prepress and Graphics Library represents Prepress Training Solution's 38th addition to its interactive online library of software training. The new FontAgent Pro course consists of eight tutorials totaling more than 45 minutes of training, teaching the user how to stay organized using sets and libraries, activate and deactivate fonts efficiently, preview fonts, and eliminate font problems.

>>Stora Enso Launches Productolith Pts. Coated Cover
>>Stora Enso recently announced the launch of its new Productolith Pts ("points") coated cover grades for heavier-weight print applications and special projects. Designed for end uses that require a clean, high-bright appearance, special finishing and consistent performance, Productolith Pts. features a smooth, semi-gloss finish with a blue-white shade and a brightness of 91. Productolith Pts. is available in C1S and C2S, with calipers ranging from 6 pt. to 14 pt. Its surface is exceptionally smooth, yielding superior printability and premium appearance for offset, heat-set offset and flexographic printing, the company said. Productolith Pts. is also available in web offset and with recycled content upon request. This new product line will be sold through Stora Enso's national distribution network of paper merchants.

>>Tensor Unveils New Tower Design
>>Tensor Group Inc. announced the introduction of its newest single-width product offering, the T-500. The T-500 is designed for both the long-run and short-run commercial and single-wide hybrid newspaper markets that are incorporating more commercial work into their business plans. The baseline machine, which is currently being offered in several cutoffs and with web widths up to 40 inches wide, is a four-high tower designed with features requested by the commercial printing sector. The high-speed T-500 press, rated at a speed of 50,000 iph, incorporates three vibrator rollers and three ink form rollers to meet the ink coverage demands of today's growing heatset and UV markets. Plate cylinder cocking with form roller-following, a standard feature, provides an additional valuable tool for accurate registration, with on the run adjustments.

>>Oce Announces Pro-Select Media Line
>>Oce, a global leader in digital document management and delivery solutions, announced the Oce Pro-Select line of instant dry media designed for 17- to 60-inch photo and proofing printers including models from Oce, Epson and HP. The line includes four films, three photo papers and one proofing paper. International Color Consortium profiles for Oce, Epson, Canon and HP printers driven by the most popular RIP solutions such as ColorBurst, Colorbyte and Onyx will be available at no charge. In addition, Oce offers complimentary application support via phone and Web for all Oce media.

>>EFI Collaborates with Customers
>>EFI announced the formation of the Web Products User Advisory Council to facilitate a two-way dialogue with customers of its popular Web solutions, including the PrinterSite suite of products and PrintSmith Site. The User Advisory Council was conceived at this year's EFI Connect conference and plans were formalized soon after. The council meetings are open to all current EFI Web product customers. The first meeting, focused on PrinterSite users, took place in mid-June at EFI's Pittsburgh office, with 50 companies in attendance, and the PrintSmith Site council meeting took place last week, with 20 companies attending.

>>Document Scanner Shipments Grow
>>According to a new forecast report released by InfoTrends, shipments of document-class scanners have grown at a rate of over 50% for the third straight year. Workgroup scanners represent the largest segment of the market, with shipments rising 75% between 2004 and 2005. Departmental scanners are also beginning to see some impressive growth due to lower price points and innovative features. Nevertheless, this segment does face serious potential challenges from increased feature sets in the workgroup segment as well as improving multifunctional peripheral solutions.

>>Management Buyout of Jemtex
>>Scailex Corp. Ltd. announced that it has entered into a reorganization agreement with senior management of Jemtex InkJet Printing Ltd. under which Scailex transferred the majority of its holdings in Jemtex to two senior managers. As a result, Scailex's interest in Jemtex was reduced from approximately 75% to 15%. Under the reorganization agreement, Scailex converted approximately $6.7 million out of $9.7 million of outstanding loans provided by Scailex to Jemtex into shares of Jemtex.

>>Four51 Unveils Solution Series
>>Four51 announced its newest program to help customers get the most out of the Four51 application and drive customer growth. The Four51 Solution Series is an ongoing program that highlights specific capabilities of the application that users might not be aware of or using completely. The first solutions to be highlighted are corporate identity, collateral management and sales force enablement.

>>Kodak Elects Quatela as Vice President
>>Eastman Kodak Co. announced that its board of directors has elected Laura Quatela as a vice president of the company, effective immediately. Quatela is director, intellectual property transactions. She is responsible for directing strategic cross-licensing and royalty-bearing licensing activities for the company, including managing IP valuations and investments, developing licensing strategy, conducting negotiations, and structuring licenses.

>>Georgia-Pacific Names President/COO
>>Georgia-Pacific Corp. announced that it has named James Hannan executive vice president/chief administrative officer, as the company's new president and chief operating officer, effective immediately. In addition, two new members have been elected to Georgia-Pacific's board of directors: Hannan and Michael Burandt, executive vice president, North American consumer products.

All printers will assert that they can produce good quality printed material at a fair price and deliver it on time. But adjusting one of these three variables will certainly affect the others. Having said that, you can still accomplish a lot with automation and standardization and by choosing the right color system for your jobs.
