ReNu Still in Stores
Even after Bausch & Lomb issued a worldwide recall for ReNu with MoistureLoc, customers in the UK are still able to purchase the contact lens solution in retail stores. Evidence of people still using ReNu raised fears that the recall has not reached everyone in the medical profession and retail outlets. Few medical practices and pharmacies monitor solutions sold to, or used by, their patients. [OPTICIAN ONLINE]

ACE Exposure
Women who take ACE inhibitors during their first trimester of pregnancy are 2.7 times more likely to have babies with birth defects than women who are not on anti-hypertensive medication. Angiotensin-converting-enzyme, or ACE inhibitors are widely used to treat high blood pressure and are often prescribed for people with diabetes. Exposure to ACE inhibitors during the first trimester cannot be considered safe and should be avoided as the risk of major malformations in infants is doubled. [LOS ANGELES TIMES]

Attacking Asthma
A Stanford University analysis of 19 studies shows the use of long-acting beta-agonist bronchodilator inhalers more than tripled users' risk of asthma-related death. Serevent and Advair asthma inhaler medications may be responsible for 4,000 of the 5,000 asthma deaths in the U.S. each year. Compared with placebos, the use of long-acting bronchodilators also doubled the rate at which asthma patients had to be hospitalized. [ALL HEADLINE NEWS]

Sperm Concern
It is well known that as women age, their ability to conceive decreases and older mothers have a greater chance of birth defects. A recent study found that as men get older, the genetic quality of sperm decreases, increasing the risk of infertility, unsuccessful pregnancies, and the inherited abnormality of dwarfism and possibly other genetic diseases. Researchers found an increase in the incidence of gene mutations that can lead to achondroplasia and Apert syndrome, which causes malformation of the skull. [SEATTLE TIMES]

Couch Potato Alert
If couch potatoes spend as much time exercising as they previously did with little or no activity, their risk of heart disease, diabetes and other health conditions can be drastically reduced. A recent study concluded that inactivity is worse than once thought and a little bit of activity makes a large difference. Men and women volunteered to be physically inactive for six months and had a complete reversal of most subsequent deterioration in health measures when they increased their activity level during the next six months. Teens Taking Antipsychotics
Antipsychotic prescriptions for the treatment of aggression and mood swings are on the rise in teens and children. Such prescriptions for people aged 20 and younger rose sixfold from 1993 to 2002. The FDA has not approved most antipsychotic drugs for pediatric, but doctors in office-based practices seem comfortable handing out second-generation antipsychotic medicines. [WEB MD]

Car Crash Reductions
Young children have a better chance of surviving a car crash in safety seats than they do with only a seat belt. Child restraint systems and booster seats can be easily misused, but improved laws and education systems can reduce child fatalities in vehicle crashes. Parents should feel confident using age-appropriate restraint for their young child to minimize their child's risk of death. [CONSUMER AFFAIRS]

Quality Yoga
Women undergoing radiation treatment for breast cancer were randomly assigned to attend yoga classes twice a week and reported improved measurements on quality of life. The women felt positive about their health and could function better compared to women solely in radiation treatment. Yoga emphasizes breathing and relaxation and can be very useful at reducing the side effects that come with breast cancer treatment. [MEDICAL NEWS TODAY]

Ill Road Rage
Intermittent explosive disorder, known to drivers as road rage, is actually an illness that affects 16 million Americans. Intermittent explosive disorder involves multiple outbursts that are way out of proportion to the situation and often include threats or aggressive actions and property damage. The condition affects 7.3% of US adults at some point during their lifetimes. [CNN NEWS]

A Drink A Day
A Danish study found that an alcoholic drink a day can lower the risk of heart disease in men but the equivalent benefit for women is one drink a week. Alcohol consumption had a significant protective effect for women, but the frequency of drinking had none, whereas for men it was the frequency. The findings may pertain to menopausal women. [NEW YORK TIMES]

Lo-cal Better
Diet may be more important than vigorous exercise to slow down the aging process. The combined effort of lowering a thyroid hormone and an inflammatory molecule with a high-nutrition, low-calorie diet, apparently reduces the body's metabolic rate, thereby slowing oxidative damage to cells. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine note an 8% reduction in calories significantly extended rodent lifespan and reduced the negative effects of aging. [PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER]

Tuna Off-Limits
Pregnant women should avoid canned tuna because it can contain high levels of mercury. High levels of the heavy metal in the bloodstream can potentially harm developing nervous systems and mercury exposure has been known to cause central nervous system diseases. New government tests have now found canned light tuna to be as potentially harmful as albacore tuna. [MSNBC]
