Remember Michael Collins? He was the pilot of the Apollo 11 Command
Module, the guy who stayed behind as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
rocketed on to become the first men to walk on the Moon. Well, this
week I feel like Michael as I sit here at O'Reilly headquarters in
Sebastopol, making sure all systems are go, and imagine San Diego
where the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, or ETech, is
taking place. All reports suggest this is probably the best ETech
has ever been, as the likes of Ray Ozzie, Clay Shirky, Bruce Sterling,
George Dyson, our own Tim O'Reilly, and so many others, provide
insight into "The Attention Economy." That's the phrase Herbert Simon hatched
in his book "Computers, Communications and the Public Interest,"
back in 1971, just two years after the first moon landing. To
wit Simon wrote: "What information consumes is rather obvious: it
consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of
information creates a poverty of attention, and a need to allocate
that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information
sources that might consume it."

Important stuff, especially for those of us who are responsible
for creating yet more content to consume the attention of recipients.

Baseball Hacks


I love baseball and analysis. Baseball Hacks gives me both in a very
accessible format. I'd like to figure out, before the 2006 season
starts, if my favorite team will be better this year than last year.
Who is going to be the best pitcher in the majors? Which team will
score the most runs? How often does a team that scores more runs beat
a team with a lower ERA? These are some of questions I am using hacks
8, 10, 18, 40, 46, 47, 49, 54, 55 to answer. This is great stuff!

Impressively, this book provides the tips, tools, and techniques for
me to do this analysis. With pitchers and catchers reporting in less
than a month, this book is a welcomed sign that Spring is just around
