Dear Friends,

"What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention
of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of
attention, and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the
overabundance of information sources that might consume it."

Believe it or not, author Herbert Simon wrote this quote in "Computers,
Communications and the Public Interest" in 1971, though it could very
well apply to our information overload today. On a daily basis, bandwidth
continues to broaden, storage grows ever larger and cheaper, and content
keeps flowing from the firehose, but what about our 60,000-year-old patterns
of information processing?

Welcome to the Attention Economy.

For the past five years, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference has
found new networked innovations before they hit the mainstream, and this
year's conference, scheduled for next week (March 6-9) in San Diego, is
no exception. The next important breakthroughs will be those that serve
as the gatekeepers of our attention, and the connections you need to make
to stay on top of the scene will all be under one roof at ETech 2006.

ETech features a star-studded lineup include Ray Ozzie, Bruce Sterling,
Jon Udell, Linda Stone, Kevin Lynch, Dick Hardt, David Heinemeier Hansson,

Advanced Perl Programming


One of the books I've used most often recently is Advanced Perl
Programming. I've found myself writing code, remembering that this
book explained how to do something, and pulling it off of the shelf
to browse. When putting together the "Related Articles" code a couple
of months ago, I ran into a problem where I had too much useless
information. I needed to extract and summarize only the useful
information. This book has a whole chapter on language processing with
Perl and, sure enough, a couple of the examples in there did just what
I needed to do.
