Divers Speak Up for Fish The dive community recently came out in force to protect U.S. fisheries against overfishing. Forty-five dive shop owners, club presidents, and equipment companies wrote personal letters to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) during a four-month public comment period that ended in late October. The agency had proposed changes to the federal overfishing standard that limited its ability to protect fisheries and ocean ecosystems. With 30 percent of commercial fish stocks deemed "overfished" by NMFS, according to Conserve Our Ocean Legacy (COOL), divers can expect fewer sightings of large predator fish including tuna, grouper and sharks. The dive industry will also suffer as fewer fish and unhealthy dive sites resulting in fewer divers buying equipment and taking trips. A decision on the proposed changes is expected early next year.
