Case Study: craigslist Uses MySQL to Serve Millions of Classified Ads

craigslist revolutionized the ease and speed with which people could create an online community that would facilitate the exchange of ideas, goods and services. According to Alexa Traffic Rankings, craigslist is one of the Top 100 most trafficked web sites in the world. Every month, craigslist receives 5 million unique visitors, and serves about 1 billion page views. In less than 4 years, MySQL has enabled craigslist to grow from 250,000 page views to over 27 million page views daily - virtually all of which are generated out of MySQL.

New Release of MySQL Connector/J (3.1.4 Beta) is Now Available

This is the second Beta release that is suitable for use with either MySQL-4.1 or MySQL-5.0 (and is required when using server-side prepared statements on MySQL-4.1.2 or newer). This release includes:

  • Added support in DatabaseMetaData.getTables() and getTableTypes() for VIEWs which are now available in MySQL server version 5.0.x.
  • Added 'useOnlyServerErrorMessages' property, which causes message text in exceptions generated by the server to only contain the text sent by the server (as opposed to the SQLState's 'standard' description, followed by the server's error message). This property is set to 'true' by default.

MySQL Connector/MXJ (1.0.5 Alpha) is Now Available

MySQL Connector/MXJ is a JMX MBean for deploying and managing a MySQL database. This makes it easy for Java developers to deploy applications which require a database by reducing installation barriers for their end-users. Connector/MXJ requires a JMX v1.2 compliant MBean container, such as JBoss version 4. As a JMX MBean, Connector/MXJ makes the MySQL database appear to be a Java-based component. This release includes:

  • The ability to have the MBean start the MySQL database upon startup.
  • If you're using JBoss, we've taken advantage of the JBoss life- cycle extension methods so that the database will gracefully shut down when JBoss is shutdown.
