MYDOOM VIRUS TARGETS INTERNET AD SERVERS
Several major Internet advertising hosts are among the many targets of a new Mydoom virus plaguing Internet users in the guise of undelivered e-mail. According to Symantec Security Response, the virus blocks computers it infects from accessing a list of 60 Web sites, among them sites that deliver ads hosted by DoubleClick, FastClick and Atlas DMT, a subsidiary of aQuantive. An infected computer would be unable to access ads that originated from these Web sites. Other sites blocked by the virus include the Microsoft Windows Update site and several anti-virus and security Web sites, including Symantec's own home page. http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26347

SEARS REAPS $2.7B INCOME FOR QUARTER
The sale by Sears, Roebuck and Co. of its credit card operation proved to be the highlight of the company's fourth quarter. It concluded 2003 by posting net income of $2.7 billion for the quarter ended Jan. 3 compared with $848 million in 2002's fourth quarter. Yesterday's announcement included the pretax gain of $4.1 billion related to the sale of the company's domestic Credit and Financial Products business. It was sold to Citigroup on Nov. 3. Citigroup and Sears also entered a multi-year marketing and servicing agreement involving a range of each company's businesses, products and services. http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26345
PORTABILITY SOLUTIONS BECOMING CLEARER
Compliance providers are getting closer to establishing a system that will help telemarketers avoid calls to cell phones in the era of wireless number portability, according to papers filed recently with the Federal Communications Commission. Wireless number portability, which lets consumers keep the same phone number when they switch from landlines to wireless or switch cell phone providers, has been around for two months. Telemarketers still have no way to keep track of consumers who switch landline numbers to cell phones. The FCC bans all telemarketing calls to cell phones when using automated dialing equipment, including predictive dialers. Meanwhile, The Direct Marketing Association filed a petition yesterday asking the Federal Communications Commission to create safe-harbor rules for telemarketers. http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26344
LAW WILL REQUIRE MONTHLY NO-CALL DOWNLOAD
A federal appropriations bill signed by President Bush this month apparently has language that requires telemarketers to download updates from the national no-call list on a monthly basis. Currently, telemarketers are required to download updates from the list every quarter. But language in the bill, H.R. 2673, gives the Federal Trade Commission 60 days to develop new rules requiring monthly downloads. The FTC did not lobby for the change but will carry out the will of Congress, said James Kohm, acting assistant director of marketing practices for the FTC. The agency likely will launch a "quick" rulemaking, complete with public comment period, to implement the congressional mandate. http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26350
ONLINE PUBLISHERS SEE GATHERING AD MOMENTUM
News publishers reported growing revenue and strong demand for advertising at their online arms in the fourth quarter, continuing a gathering online advertising recovery. New York Times Digital, which publishes NYTimes.com and Boston.com, said this week that its sales grew 27 percent in the quarter to $25 million. The online unit's operating profit doubled to $7.2 million from the year-ago period. Likewise, the Washington Post Co. said its online publishing arm increased revenue 34 percent to $14.2 million. The Post said it saw strong demand for its local and national advertising, which grew 54 percent. The company does not break out profits from the online division. http://www.dmnews.com/cgi-bin/artprevbot.cgi?article_id=26348
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING BOOSTS UPS PROFITS 8.5%
Strong gains in international shipping contributed to a 19 percent jump in adjusted net income and an 8.2 percent rise in revenue for the fourth quarter, United Parcel Service said yesterday. For the full year, consolidated revenue increased 7.1 percent while operating profit rose 8.5 percent. International package revenue rose 17 percent in the quarter, and operating profit increased 56 percent. U.S. package revenue rose 7 percent in the quarter while operating profit was up 9.6 percent. UPS said its U.S. package volume should grow about 4 percent in 2004 while continued strength in the international segment should bring a 20 percent increase in profitability.
UK POSTAL WORKERS ACCEPT DEAL

The provisional agreement between the negotiators was thrashed out just before Christmas break, but required the approval of union members. No details on the deal were announced. CLASSIFIED
