Dear *** ***, You may know that Afternic.com handled the sale of Back.com last week, for a considerable sum. To those who rejoice in this news, seeing evidence of an enduring domain name aftermarket, I'd urge a bit more insight. The sale wasn't about the aftermarket (which obviously remains healthy and robust); it was about the name and its value to the buyer. The buyer, a unit of $5 billion med-tech firm Medtronic, was kind enough to discuss its plans for Back.com with the URLy Indicator. The company has invested big bucks to create a series of education channels for patients with spine disorders, including NeckReference.com and iScoliosis.com. People from 75 countries visit these sites for information about their back problems, partly because Medtronic has committed to providing valuable, original content written and edited by orthopaedic and neuro surgeons. After spending heavily to provide this information to the marketplace, it made sense for Medtronic to invest in a top-grade domain name as part of this effort. The seller turned an impressive profit on the sale, but only because the name perfectly fit the buyer's strategy. How many other sellers are working hard to anticipate buyers' needs and the roles their names can play in corporate Web efforts? It's customary for appraisers to wish other sellers good luck, but luck had little to do with the sale of Back.com. Regards,

WILL THE AFTERMARKET STEER THE .BIZ/.INFO PRIMARY MARKET? As the .biz and .info registries prepare to shift from pre-registration phases to live operations, a major shift in registration patterns and clientele will undoubtedly follow. A recent URLy poll illustrates this best: Four out of five prospective .biz/.info registrants said that they plan to purchase some or all of their targeted names after the live date; half of them declined entirely to participate in pre-registration. That means that the registries' typical post-launch clientele will be heavily seasoned-perhaps dominated-by speculative registrants. As aftermarket players-the most common bulk registrants-these customers have sufficient purchasing power to sway the marketplace, affecting pricing and registration policies. In effect, the power of the aftermarket may control the primary market. In light of this prospect, the Afternic community may be the best indicator of the extent of its own impact on the primary market. We'd like to hear your predictions. If you were to appraise the entire post-launch .biz and .info primary markets, what would you expect? |

| QUOTE OF THE WEEK |
"The legal side of things is a nightmare, it's not like leasing a house or car where there are only limited uses the person can do with the leased item. With a domain, since your the registered owner and current domain laws relate to registered owner rather than user, your responsible for everything that person does with the name…" foresightful |

WIZARD.COM The Urly is well aware that the new Harry Potter movie is not scheduled to open until November, but that didn't stop us from doing a bit of preliminary investigation. Just as well we took a look to see where Wizard.com resolves since it is not what the Urly expected at all. Viawest, a better business Internet service, is the traffic catcher for wizard.com. So now we have to wonder, will their page views increase with the release of the Harry Potter movie? |
