Urly Inidcator Issue 80 Afternic.com
Friday, 8.03.01

Dear [*** ***,

I've been watching you.
Sort of. Actually, I've been looking through the results of this year's URLy polls, trying to work up a profile of the typical Afternic member with limited success. There are commonalities, but generally Afternic members are hard to pin down.

It makes perfect sense, of course. Unique selling strategies, infinite buying motivations, and disparate political views create one of domain buyer, or a standard the most robust, fascinating marketplaces on the Internet. Where the products are infinitely diverse, there can't be a typical, ordinary buyer or seller. And there isn't. But if you're as curious to know the opinions of your fellow members as I was, read on. It's an interesting story.

Regards,

Peter Girard.

VIEWS AND VISIONS OF THE AFTERNIC COMMUNITY
Since the URLy adopted its new, millennial look in January, we've been polling readers on their experiences and expertise in the domain name industry. At the halfway point of 2001, we've been able to assemble a composite, based on aggregate response data, of the Afternic community's opinions and stances on a variety of issues.

Habits of the highly successful-

  • 34% sold a domain name in 2000
  • 67% sometimes develop sites around their names; 13% always develop their names
  • 50% consider search engine listings when they buy a name; (50% don't)
  • 76% own names in multiple TLDs; 49% own names in three or more TLDs, including ccTLDs
  • 40% consider international relations before investing in specific ccTLDs
  • 28% own foreign translations of their best names

Staking claim in a brave new world-

  • 74% plan to request names in .biz or .info
  • 67% plan to acquire a .name domain
  • 39% own a New.net name
  • 39% believe alternative TLDs should be added to the ICANN root; 50% believe they should be outlawed.

Can't we all just get along?-

  • Only 26% have been involved in a UDRP case; slightly more than half won their cases
  • 52% believe the use of trademarks in parody sites' URLs should be protected; 48% disagree
  • 47% believe the protection offered by .biz to trademark holders is excessive; 28% believe .biz doesn't go far enough to protect trademark holders

    What me worry?-

  • 67% worry that consolidation and failure in the registrar market may negatively affect them
  • 70% worry that negative press coverage of the domain name industry will damage the market
